California Republican state Sen. Brian Dahle will announce his candidacy for governor on Tuesday, one of the first Republicans to publicly challenge Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom since his decisive victory in a recall election just five months ago.
The announcement poses little risk for Dahle, a relatively unknown lawmaker representing the rural, conservative northeast corner of the state far from the liberal power centers of Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay area. He's not on the ballot in this year's elections, and he can't run for reelection in 2024 because of term limits.
But it ensures Republicans will have someone on the ballot against Newsom, who soundly defeated a host of Republican challengers just five months ago in a recall election fueled by anger over his handling of the pandemic.

That’ll go nowhere fast.
Is that what the Republican party has become, celebrating someone, anyone, on the ballot?
sorry we never heard of the fellow so he might be wonderful or maybe not. I cannot comment on what I don’t know
but ....this we do know...
having unknowns running is not normally a winning strategy, but then again we all know that the Californication state GOP-E is nothing more than an impotent golfing party at the local retirement village clubhouse
The vote in California is so rigged that God couldn’t win.
Actually God hasn’t won in California for quite some time.
I’m just here for the predictable defeatism. Let’s just not run anybody; that way we’ll at least have something different to whine about.
He sounds like he’s from a Conservative area of California, so why not run. He’ll keep his seat and he can’t run in 2024, so why not. Time to fight the Elites of both parties...
“decisive victory”
Dems have stacked that deck pretty high.
He may not even make it thru the primary. It’s a blanket primary where the top two finishers go on to the general election - regardless of whether there’s a D or R behind your name.
Think back to 2016 when Kameltoe Harris got elected to the Senate in California. Her general election opponent was Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez. Both were Democrats.
Although this guy does have a chance of making it to the general election because there likely won’t be anyone of high name ID running against Newsom, thus giving him a chance to make it to the general election.
