ELYSBURG - A Bloomsburg University student from York was killed Friday when he and another student fell down an icy cliff in Montour County.
Greg Anstine was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:22 p.m. from multiple blunt force injuries, Coroner Scott Lynn said Saturday.
Injured was another Bloomsburg student, Kyra Defstefano, who was admitted to Geisinger Medical Center near Danville. She has been discharged, a spokesperson said.
She fell about 50 feet and was stranded part way down the cliff in Mayberry Twp. between Elysburg and the North Branch of the Susquehanna River, The News-Item in Shamokin reported.
Emergency crews from Northumberland and Montour counties responded to her 911 call at 3:05 p.m. and used ropes to bring her to safety, the paper said.
Anstine and Defstefano lost their footing at a vista locally known as “The Pinnacle” along Sharp Ridge Road, the report stated.
Elysburg Chief Dennis Kroh gave this account of the rescue to The News-Item:
“We could see the young lady. She was a good 50 feet down the bank. It was very icy and it was very slippery.
“Our rescue team got into harnesses, connected ropes and rappelled down to her. We secured her until more rescuers could come down to her. We then placed her in a stokes basket and brought her back up to be treated.”
Anstine was a sophomore business administration major from York and Defstefano is a junior education major from Hatfield, a Bloomsburg spokesperson said.
The university released this statement on Anstine’s death: “The BU community is saddened by the passing of Greg and we ask everyone to keep his family and friends in their thoughts during this time.”
The Reader Gregory was tonsured at the hand of Metropolitan Savas of Pittsburgh and in the presence of His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios at the occasion of the Centennial of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation.
May his Memory be Eternal!
Much of central PA was under a solid casing of glassy ice yesterday. Hours of rain followed by freezing temperatures. You hardly dared walk on the sidewalk.
I understand that the ice storm forced the cancellation of classes at BSU yesterday.
Blessed repose and eternal memory.
on a day trip on a nasty day.
“in their thoughts”
Notice they don’t state “prayers”. College.
You knew this young man?
Sounds great!
So sad, though - but sounds that his soul will be at rest for sure.
With the Saints give rest, O Christ, to the soul of Thy servant where there is no pain, no sorrow, no sighing, but Life everlasting.
I have a niece who graduated from there....hilly to say the least....
Was he related to the personal injury lawyer?

We used to hike the icy falls trails at Ricket’s Glen while at Bloomsburg. They were treacherous.
Went hiking in Zion NP last week. Got most of the way up Angel’s Landing trail before encountering icy spots. Turned around - breathtaking views from the top but not worth dying for.
Memory Eternal!
Yes they were treacherous w/o ice. Sad that many youth haven’t yet had the benefit of life experiences to gain respect for the possible.
Ice climbing the 100 ft waterfalls in January was fun.
At a place “known as “The Pinnacle” along Sharp Ridge Road...”
I’m glad that I survived doing similar things as a youth.

Heck, that’s dangerous enough in the summertime.
