Asheville One of the “Worst Places to Live”
Tribune Papers ^ | DECEMBER 25, 2021 | ABI COLE

Asheville – In the past few years, national publications championed Asheville as one of the best vacation spots.

The area’s natural beauty, top rated cuisine and cultural experiences position the area as a top tourist spot. It was named #8 on Travel + Leisure’s “50 Best Places to Travel in 2020. The trusted vacation magazine said this about the city:

“With a small-town feel and big-city cultural cred, Asheville, North Carolina, is home to artists, musicians, and food and drink entrepreneurs who were making microbrews and serving farm-to-table meals long before such things were de rigueur,” Travel + Leisure wrote.

Unfortunate Ranking Yet, a recent National Public Radio Planet Money piece isn’t as kind to the city. A Dec. 14 article titled, “The best and worst places to live if you only care about money” found that the “Land of the Sky” fared poorly in a recent Stanford University study about livability and income. NPR featured Asheville on three damaging lists:

1. The five places with the lowest standard of living for college graduates. Asheville came in fifth, after Medford, Oregon; Provo, Utah; Salem, Oregon; and Olympia, Washington.

As for the politicians they support, 100% destruction in their quest for control.

************

Americans seem to be OK with kleptocratic and authoritarian government. They sure vote for a lot of it — at all levels.

Every time I go there, there are more and more homeless on the streets. I guess lib towns are magnets for them.

And liberals.

They destroy every single thing they get their filthy cloven hooves on.

Hopefully the good folks of Murphy stand firm and the ones that leave are replaced by good Conservatives. I don’t know much about it, but from what I gathered, it’s not a place for outsiders and if you do move there, it would benefit you to be like the locals.

Hopefully, between there and the Cherokee Indians, the liberal disease from Asheville doesn’t spread much further.

Nashville is done. Never to return. A buddy lives in Brentwood. Nothing too crazy. Was loving and bragging about how much his house appreciated. Now he’s miserable. Traffic is insane. And the Leftward, radical Left, shift of the politics in Nashville has really soured him

Yep, no doubt. The liberals ruin everything.

I have heard it said that Asheville is a haven for homosexuals, transgenders and other odd or different types of people. I live at the other end of NC and don’t know much about the place.

The Chief Judge may office in Ashville, but 3 of the 4 remaining judges are in Charlotte, as are both of the Senior Judges. And the bankruptcy court in Ashville won't even accept money - all payments have to go to Charlotte.

Didn't know that. Interesting. I haven't kept up with Portland, OR. But the feds should move all the offices out of that hellhole. Relocate them to Bend or somewhere nearby.

I’m sure apathy and complacency plays a huge role.

Not worried about the wolves, until the wolves are at my door. By then it will too late unless you’re willing and able to defend yourself.

And, I think many of the supporters are either full-tilt in agreement with it, because they’re part of the operation, or they see themselves as a loyal foot soldier and the policies will never boomerang back on them. Until they do.

The homeless are a good indication that a place is going to hell.

And panhandlers, like the hundreds in Nashville, it tells you alot about the mayor that they leave them to harass people

I will enjoy watching Asheville decline.

Too bad though. They could have remained awesome. They chose ( wokeness ) poorly.

And, all done by greedy Republican politicians who were promised the world by all these companies and have had ZERO problems selling out their neighbors, constituents and friends for an envelope full of cash. I remember when BMW announced its move there. All the politicians on tv like they won WW2. I’m not saying the plant was a bad thing. It provided jobs for the locals. But, what followed is/was a disaster. And will continue to be.

The whole time, the politicians, their developer puppet masters, real estate agent puppet masters, and anyone other puppet master that will line their pockets will continue to sell the place out. And, when the politicians are done, they can move to Hilton Head or Kiawah and enjoy their spoils.

This is going to be the script from now on....sadly.

About the only upside to all of this is, I would encourage people to learn a trade, get good at it and be reliable. Then, when you become one of the best electricians in town, you can take all of these people to the absolute cleaners when they want you to do work for them.

Very depressing. My daughter went to Furman 15 years ago, and we loved to drive down through Asheville down to Greenville. Both were beautiful and we loved going there.

Ashville has been a liberal enclave for decades. Maybe a fence should be built around it.

So are the Richie or pans.....what are those?

As for the hispanics, as you know, they go where the work is and if they’re slamming up subdivisions and shopping centers, that’s where they’ll be.

I’ll say one thing for them and I’m am not a fan of them by any stretch. I’d love to see them all back home. But like you, I don’t have as much of an issue with them as I do with the liberal transplants. Eventually, those hispanics start paying taxes and dealing with government and they tend not to like it all that much.

My wife went there.

Interesting to hear. We still live quite cheaply, certainly compared to what living up north cost me. I don’t go downtown much anymore, because downtown Simpsonville has gotten quite wonderful and is right in my back yard. It’s reasonably priced (especially if you bring your own booze to Vons! lol), fun, the people are great to be around. When I do go to Greenville, it looks about the same to me as it has for the last 20 years or so: a bunch of businesses that I never understood how they stayed in business, but a lot of fun nonetheless. Plus some largely mediocre restaurants.

Right now, we’re in such a state of economic flux all over the country that I wouldn’t put too much stock in what’s growing right now vs what isn’t. Everyone wants to be drunk, because they know what’s coming? Who knows, but I wouldn’t count out Michelin, BMW, Sealed Air, etc. We’re better positioned than most IMHO.

Maybe America has reached its population limits? Decline in every location I’ve ever lived!

So we’re one country now? And any place where enough people want to move is bound to be ruined? Life is like that.

It has been, but the rot has really accelerated for some reason. Probably when Soetero used to go there, begging for money and stay at the Grove Park Inn.

As for a fence, nahhhhh.... 20’ T-Walls with controlled Entry/Exit, just like we had in Iraq.

Or, one neighborhood at a time, waves of gun-toting Conservatives move back in. Start taking over, one block at a time and make life really uncomfortable for them. Everywhere they look they see a guy with a MAGA hat on, toting their flavor of pistol. Bunch of guys rolling into town with a nice deer or black bear they just took down.

Open up a biker bar that caters to the 99%, kind of like the Patriot Guard Riders and other motorcycle enthusiasts, and have them roll through town. Hell, even let the old timers from the 1% in there, too. They tend to be pretty laid back folks that just want to ride and have a few beers with like minded folks.
