House moves closer to scrapping school board salaries, giving parents voice in curriculum (Florida)

A bill that would eliminate salaries for school board members and increase scrutiny of the way public-school instructional materials and library books are chosen is now primed for consideration by the full House. The measure (HB 1467) is largely centered on increasing parents’ involvement in the selection of books and other learning materials.

The bill requires that any committees convened for the purpose of “ranking, eliminating, or selecting” instructional materials must also include parents. The House Appropriations Committee on Monday signed off on the proposal after adding some tweaks.

An amendment adopted by the committee made clear that the part of the bill dealing with scrapping board members’ salaries would apply to members who are newly elected or re-elected on or after Aug. 1, 2022.

“The intent is to make sure that when members decide to run for the position, they know up front what the situation is with salaries,” Rep. Sam Garrison, a Fleming Island Republican who sponsored the bill, said.

The amendment also would allow board members who wouldn’t receive salaries to receive “reimbursements” of up to $200 for each meeting they attend, up to a maximum of $4,800 per year. Democrats on the panel bristled at capping board members’ yearly compensation at less than $5,000.

The Florida School Boards Association opposes the bill. Danielle Thomas, a lobbyist with the association, said the proposal would create “great inequalities” for school board members across the state and would favor “the elite” who could afford to work for no salary.

Eliminating salaries for school board trustees is a great idea. My local worthless leftist school board is comprised of union-backed retirees who are (I’ve heard) mainly doing it for the HEALTH INSURANCE.

Quit dancing around it and do school vouchers. Let the parents send their kids to good schools.

I predict in the end the gubment schools will learn their lesson and change their ways to compete.

School Board Salaries????

WTF is that all about. I though the board was supposed to be volunteers of concerned parents that had children in the system.

Government, at every level, is disgusting. I’m sure, at some point, members of the board voted to give themselves a salary.

It’s not the salaries. It’s steering contracts to friends and family.

True that. Isn’t the current FL school voucher program limited to only those below a certain income threshold? That’s a good start, but I’m talking about school vouchers for everybody, including the middle class and upper class.

How about a requirement that you must have a child enrolled in the school district in order to sit on the school board?

When it comes to books in K-8, all school systems should adopt the “No F’s” bill.

No F*cks, Fags, Fornication

Florida Public Schools are largely insulated from normal politics in a state nominally dominated by elderly retirees.

School districts fund, via the taxes we pay, the entire cost of school related elections and referenda.

Elections/referenda are held on days not associated with federal/state primary or general elections. They are also not publicized, but you can bet the teachers and their families know.

It isn’t uncommon to find out after the fact that an election was held or of a new half cent local retail tax.

Private schools are better. If government funds a school, it’s easier for it to impose conditions about what schools do.

But if government money subsidizes vouchers, doesn't that get the camel's nose in the tent?

Yes.

Private schools are those not funded by government.

The Florida School Boards Association opposes the bill.

I'm sure they do. Lets get some parents on that board too. In fact, it should be made-up entirely of parents.

WOW!!

One would think the local governments and state legislature would do something about that. But when so many are dipping into that kitty inguess it’s hard to cut yourself off.

Local municipalities can’t do a thing about the governance or policies of county school districts.

But, as recently proposed bills show, the FL GOP legislature and governor are getting involved.

A very good thing.

Hopefully to become a model for others to use

I don’t have kids. So none in the local system. But with covid and the revelations on what is being taught, word is that hundreds are no longer in the system. Still haven’t seen my taxes adjusted.

Interesting, when the private sector lays folks off there are no stories. School enrolllment shrinks and maybe a few teachers have to get let go and the world is coming to an end. Then they can’t wait to backfil all those empty desks with illegals.
