It baffled us in Alabama when Trump endorsed Luther Strange instead of Roy Moore in the 2018 special senate election. Roy Moore won the primary anyway and lost to Doug Jones. If Trump had endorsed someone more conservative he might have won.
That's why he never endorsed Moore. He knew a loser when he saw it.
Interestingly, Trump had every reason to undermine Jeff Sessions when he ran to get his old seat back in 2020, but he refused to endorse his primary opponent Tommy Tuberville until polls came out very late in the campaign showing him with a huge lead.
National vs local Politics. Then the dirt BS came out and then ninnies ran from Roy. Like dougie was somehow better. I’m still embarrassed we elected dumb azz Dougie Jones. Pathetic. Sorry from AL
Yep. Everybody is smarter than Trump.
Luther Strange was the incumbent and had one of the most conservative voting records in the Senate for his short tenure there. Roy Moore was the only candidate who could have lost the race and he certainly did. Awful record of arrogance acting like the rules don’t apply to him and he can do whatever he wishes - right until the end just assuming he’d win and went out of state to a ball game - the weekend before the election!
Mo Brooks was also a candidate but had intensely bashed Trump during the primary and Trump probably remembered that.
Trump explained it very clearly. He said Moore would have trouble winning the general, which proved correct.
Roy Moore Lost because he was a threat to McConnell. He was openly opposed by Senator Shelby (and other republican establishment senators). Shelby and several other republicans openly supported the Democratic candidate. The media and their fake scandal didn’t help. Lastly, there was lots of voter fraud in Birmingham, all helped to erase a 7 point lead in a weeks time.
