Corals doomed even if global climate goals met: study

Paris (AFP) – Coral reefs that anchor a quarter of marine wildlife and the livelihoods of more than half-a-billion people will most likely be wiped out even if global warming is capped within Paris climate goals, researchers said Tuesday.

An average increase of 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels would see more than 99 percent of the world's coral reefs unable to recover from ever more frequent marine heat waves, they reported in the journal PLOS Climate.

At two degrees of warming, mortality will be 100 percent according to the study, which used a new generation of climate models with an unprecedented resolution of one square kilometre.

In 2018, the IPCC predicted that 70 to 90 percent of corals would be lost at the 1.5C threshold, and 99 percent if temperatures rose another half-a-degree.

The new findings suggest those grim forecasts were in fact unduly optimistic.

"won't coral colonies just slowly resettle into adjacent but slightly colder waters?"

Yes corals will. Most people are too stupid to realize that corals do you mass spawning with trillions of eggs that will grow wherever conditions are favorable.

Also existing, mature corals can swap out their symbiotic algae for other algae species that match the temperature ranges they find themselves in. When they send out hand flapping, doom porn new stories about coral bleaching it is just the coral booting out the old algae to make room for new symbiotic algae. It is a perfectly normal and natural process that sometimes ends with the death of the coral but, that is life.

If they would spend the money they waste in space on ocean exploration just imagine what good it would do.

True and with the vaccine killing millions why worry about 1/2 billion people? When the Zombie app is triggered there won’t be any worries.

It is complete BS.

The Australian reef researcher who showed it was BS was hounded out of his University position for telling the truth.

Yep. And they’ve found places that were “bleached” that are returning to life too.
These people are idiots.

Then there’s the fact that 65% of all coral species live in the deep ocean...

There’s that thing, a molten core, that supposedly is over 9000°F in the center of the earth. Haven’t heard anyone posit about where all of that heat dissipates to…
