DETROIT (AP) — Tesla is recalling nearly 54,000 cars and SUVs because their “Full Self-Driving” software lets them roll through stop signs without coming to a complete halt.
Documents posted Tuesday by U.S. safety regulators say that Tesla will disable the feature with an over-the-internet software update. The “rolling stop” feature allows vehicles to go through intersections with all-way stop signs at up to 5.6 miles per hour.
Selected Tesla drivers are “beta testing” the “Full Self-Driving” software on public roads. The company says the cars cannot drive themselves and drivers must be ready to take action at all times.
A firmware release to disable the rolling stops is expected to be sent out in early February.
A message was left early Tuesday seeking comment from Tesla, which has disbanded its media relations department.
Alain Kornhauser, faculty chair of autonomous vehicle engineering at Princeton University, said the recall is an example of NHTSA is doing its job as the nation’s road safety watchdog. The recall “shows that they can be effective even if Tesla should have been more responsible in the first place,” he said.

Gee, you’d think the programmers would focus first on stopping the vehicle if a human being or animal is in the way, and second to stop at a stop sign. The signs are universal in shape and size, at least in this country.
I give Elon Musk all the credit for his amazing technology with SpaceX, but you simply cannot code the stupidity factor of other drivers into the self driving automobile software..
Self-driving cars are about public safety the same way CoupFlu is about public health.
Desperate hit piece after 10% positive stock pop. Duh.
Next month, Tesla is introducing its latest model of self driving car, the “Death Wish.”
Obviously the govt hasn’t caught up with Elon’s tech and needs to upgrade and program the stop signs to comm with Teslas command and control modules. Sheesh!
“The agency also is investigating why Teslas on Autopilot have repeatedly crashed into emergency vehicles parked on roadways.”
Something our EV reps here don’t bother to tell us...
Wow, just like humans - isn't AI awesome!
So they design their software to BREAK THE LAW by rolling through stop signs. Good, the owners deserve the tickets.
They were California programmers and programmed the California stop.

This story is likely the regime getting back at Elon Musk for calling Biden a “damp sock puppet”.
NEVER run a GREEN light in Massachusetts!
Snicker.

Recognition is more subtle than one thinks. You know what a stop sign looks like because you are conscious and carry a higher level concept of a stop sign. The recognition part “works” for you because your mind is consciously “looking” for stop signs. It. has a leaned understanding of important objects and can therefor rapidly differentiate a dog from a squirrel or leaves blowing in the wind.
An autonomous vehicle has no higher level consciousness. It doesn’t know stop signs, dog, people or leaves blowing in the wind. It has no meta understanding of any of that. It has only sensors attempting to differentiate shadows from objects and algorithms to attempt to identify objects. It then applies any rules, more algorithms, on top of its “decisions” about objects. Algorithms on top of algorithms all without any overriding conscious process occurring at a higher level.
So something a seemingly simple as a snow covered stop-sign, or a stop-sign half shaded by a tree limb, may not be “recognized” as a stop sign.
People might be alarmed at the number of computer programmers that are so liberal they don’t even have a driver’s license.
And here I thought stop signs were just suggestions.
Tesla needs programmers “with compassion and vision”...
It's called the "Hillary" subroutine in the programming.
