The mayor of Terry Fox’s British Columbia hometown and the leader of the federal opposition are among those speaking out Saturday, after a statue of Canadian icon Terry Fox was covered in political statements at an Ottawa rally opposing COVID-19 measures.
“To have someone try and appropriate his legacy and his image for a political cause, whatever the cause, is just sickening,” Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West told Global News.
“It’s just so wrong.”
Photos from the rally showed the statue holding an upside-down Canadian flag, along with a sign that reads “mandate freedom.” Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson said he had instructed city staff to remove the items, but within an hour new photos appeared on social media showing the statue holding a new protest sign.
Fox, a cancer patient and amputee, was born in Winnipeg, but raised in Port Coquitlam, B.C. The 22-year-old became a national icon with his 1980 attempt to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research.
Fox lost his battle to cancer in 1981 before he could complete his cross-country journey, but became a national inspiration. Millions of dollars have since been raised in his name for cancer research...

as a native and former canuck, we grew up idolizing Terry Fox. However, I doubt it was truckers involved.

The folks in Terry Fox’s home town have a point, don’t know what they thought of the gay appropriation, if they knew of it at all.
Some public figures might be more appropriate to “re-purpose” after the fact. Terry was essentially a private citizen and regular guy, and to assume one knows what he might have thought forty years after his passing (at a much too early age) is presumptuous for anyone, gay, trucker, or born again Christian for that matter.
However, we’re not going to give up our essential freedoms because some misguided person did something not 100% perfectly well thought out, or some dog pissed on a war memorial whether by accident or by design.
In fact we’re not going to give up our freedoms for anything, least of all the simpering bad acting of a boy whose parentage is not quite known, but suspect in any scenario.

Actually glad you asked. In June of 2019 at a campaign rally JOE BIDEN stated, “IF I AM ELECTED, WE ARE GOING TO CURE CANCER.” I wonder, if Joe has been so busy killing COVID, that he probably had to put the cancer cure on the back burner. Looks like cancer victims are going to have to wait until his second term unless he decides to appoint Kamala Harris as his CANCER CURE CZAR.
(It is so surprising that none in media, or Republican leaders for that matter remember Joes cancer cure promise, they don’t want to talk about it. It’s like he never said it, yet I bet there are those with cancer who might have taken this promise seriously and prayed it was true) I consider it Joe’s BIG MATZAH BALL.
