Living by the Code: In China, Covid-Era Controls May Outlast the Virus (NY Times)
The New York Times ^ | Jan. 30, 2022 | Chris Buckley, Vivian Wang and Keith Bradsher

The police had warned Xie Yang, a human rights lawyer, not to go to Shanghai to visit the mother of a dissident. He went to the airport anyway.

His phone’s health code app — a digital pass indicating possible exposure to the coronavirus — was green, which meant he could travel. His home city, Changsha, had no Covid-19 cases, and he had not left in weeks.

Then his app turned red, flagging him as high risk. Airport security tried to put him in quarantine, but he resisted. Mr. Xie accused the authorities of meddling with his health code to bar him from traveling.

“The Chinese Communist Party has found the best model for controlling people,” he said in a telephone interview in December. This month, the police detained Mr. Xie, a government critic, accusing him of inciting subversion and provoking trouble.

Sunday front page story. Not sure if that's as big a deal as in the old days, but they sure aren't burying it.

Surprising, to say the least.

Btw, I don’t have a subscription to the NYT…is there someplace I could read the rest of the article? Just in case their praise of the Chinese system is buried a few paragraphs down…

I’m sure we can find many past articles of the Times applauding China’s tactics to handle COVID. Frauds.

Yup, as expected, here is an article from FEB 2021 lauding the commies and how they won the war on COVID. I despise these people.

I guess I’m a bad guy for thinking this way but I don’t mind the Chicoms cracking down on their own people - nearly every nasty bug to circle the globe originates there.

Its them or us. If the average Chinese doesn’t like it they know what they can do.

What can that newspaper expect from a one-party state where nobody — even most party members — has any rights?

Mr. Xie accused the authorities of meddling with his health code to bar him from traveling.

Western elites can't wait to assume such power.

So they used the “vaccine passport” to control his movement. Clever! Who would have ever thought they would do such a thing? (you and I!)

Does anyone with a working brain think the US authorities wouldn’t do the same thing to us?

For once, the NYT headline speaks the truth. The government plans to keep the lockdowns/masks/jabs/arrests/harassment/ once the virus is no more than a bad cold.

"Sunday front page story. Not sure if that's as big a deal as in the old days, but they sure aren't burying it."

Because no one will remember this story when, in 2028, the Democrat Congress/President that succeeds Trump's 2nd Term, passes/signs an AI bill about 20 minutes after The Don is out of office, enforcing 'social credit' on every American.
