Well good, Brandon was able to make it back to Delaware for his “weekend recharge” of whatever they’re feeding him.

Just watched a live video, someone’s walking around in Manhattan saying “serious snow...real deal!...I’ve never been to Moscow but this feels like Moscow.”

Aside from his dearth of logic, look at the sidewalks and streets. There’s hardly anything. People are walking around, fewer than usual but still plenty of people. They’re not staggering in knee-deep snow. It’s not even ankle deep. One might almost suspect the people are tool users, familiar with shovels and plows.

The guy should buy some pretzels and go home and watch Dr. Zhivago. Serious snow indoors!! :D

I was in Philadelphia and it wasn't that bad, but we aren't New England.

At the risk of sounding like a pro-govt troll (yeah...that's me...just look at my posting history), municipalities have (generally) gotten MUCH better at snow removal over time. Remember, by 1978, the increase in vehicle ownership was only about 50-60 years old, and govt likely trailed that ramped-up demand for snow-free roads.

Since the blizzard of '93 (I was in PA at that time) the typical saga is a) mass hysteria before the storm, b) prep for the storm - food, booze, ammo, gasoline, c) stay home, eat, drink, plink, d), storm is bad but fails to meet the hysteria, e) muni workers keep things generally clear, e) next day, roads are clear and we sort out what to do with 7 loaves of bread and 19lbs of beef and 3 bottles of Johnny Walker Black.

“...Which was a buzzkill for us thinking that we were going to get out of school early.”

I was in high school in Calif when Kennedy was shot. First question we all had was, “will be get out early?” We didn’t.

"I was living just off of Revere Street in Revere during the 1978 storm. Our side street never did get properly plowed. Two days after the storm, all the residents came out and we had a snow-shoveling party. Portable radios were cranked up to WRKO (still a Top 40 station back then) and all the males on the street 14 and older just got to it."

I worked at Richardson's dairy and the forecast was only for a few inches, and I had to got in early (4AM) to help process milk before loading the 12 ton truck and head to stores in Malden, Everett and Lynn (Tuesday's run being done on Wed.). I woke up about 3AM to find many inches of snow, and shoveled for a long time (living in Danvers) to get to the street, only to find that even with 15'' studded snow tires on my 67 Catalina then I could not drive.

That night I went in to help process milk, and loaded the truck, and slept across the street where the pasteurizer and wife were staying. Next morning I found myself about the only vehicle on Rt. 1, and the big 10.00 truck tires dug thru the snow well enough. First stop normally got 15 cases (9 half gals to a case or 4 gals) for two days, and owner said "give me all the milk you can" so i gave him 90 cases (which I should not have).

Then he asked us (I had a young helper) to go down the street and pick up 100 loaves of bread. We owed him a favor so i did that, and an hour later we came back. With no racks the bread was stacked like milk cases and so the bottom ones were like pancakes, which they sold like. Owner said he had 10 cases of milk left. All the stops were looking for milk. Thank God for His manifold grace.

"all the males on the street 14 and older just got to it"

In this populous city it seems like most all the males on the street until age 30 stay inside.

muni workers keep things generally clear, e) next day,

No, here in this city of high pop. density (=hard to find parking) we shovel snow from driveways (if you have one) on the side of the walk and try to find a place to shovel snow from the walk onto someplace close. Good exercise though, and help neighbors, thank God, and brings neighbors together more.

Updates:

49 MINUTES AGO Blizzard conditions confirmed across 4 Northeast states By Adriana Navarro, AccuWeather staff writer The National Weather Service has confirmed blizzard conditions across parts of Suffolk County, New York, and New London, Connecticut, Saturday morning, as well as along the coastal strip of New Jersey and Delaware beaches both Friday night and Saturday morning. This included places across the Monmouth County coast, Long Beach Island, Atlantic City, Cape May and all of the Delaware beaches, according to the NWS. To meet the blizzard criteria, there must be three or more hours of visibility reductions to one-quarter mile or less due to falling or blowing snow, as well as sustained winds or frequent gusts of 35 mph or greater.
20 MINUTES AGO Power outages mount across eastern Massachusetts By Adriana Navarro, AccuWeather staff writer Power outages are continuing to climb across eastern Massachusetts amid the nor’easter, far surpassing the surrounding states. Currently, over 119,000 customers in the state are experiencing power outages — twice as many outages as New York, the state with the second-highest number of outages in the Northeast — is experiencing, according to PowerOutage.US. Extreme Meteorologist Reed Timmer reported nearly 100-mph winds at Truro Beach, Massachusetts, shortly after noon Saturday. As of 1:25 p.m., Wellfleet and Yarmouth, two towns in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, recorded 81-mph wind gusts Saturday. West Dennis, also in Barnstable County, had recorded an 81-mph wind gust. “The winds feel like they’re from the Wizard of Oz,” one Twitter user from Plymouth Harbor commented on a tweet by the National Weather Service that showed a map of wind gusts. - https://www.accuweather.com/en/winter-weather/live-news/latest-updates-on-northeast-snow-storm/1132968

From what I can see in a future WHDH radar forecast, it is looking like 9:30 PM cessation in this area But the storm is not moving much now, but rotating, picking up moisture from the ocean and dropping to inland till about 7PM then a rapid removal Eastward taking place. Should get back out about 6.

"One of the incredible things about 1978 that I read about is that the 1978 storm hit after the morning commute while everyone was at work, hence the attempt to get back home as seen in these amazing pictures. Add to that the high tide. Pretty messed up."

True. Plus there was some snow depth already.

Still about 20 miles northwest of Portland, Maine. storm is onm the wind-down side. Winds are brisk but lighter that at the peak. We got a whopping 4 inches of dry snow. Wind prevented accumulation on tops of cars. I’ll likely wait until it is “all done” to move it, three hours from now by rough estimate.

Dogs having a blast in this stuff!

They now “NAME” these storms. Going to check with a real expert in historical weather and the patterns repeated of these occurrences over decades (reflecting the solar cycle and many other factors known to professional meteorologists for well nigh 30 plus years).

Check in on Saturdays for the free Weather Bell update from Joe. For a little money you can get real professional commercial value weather predictions and patterns. Not something from the “rainbow boy” toot who started Weather Underground (the name alone should give a clue. And it is now part of a Big Weather outfit— acquired).

That prediction, “chance of flurries”, followed by three feet of snow (I was on the North Shore, got more than Boston) put me off of weather forecasting to this day.

Just got in. So light snow and such wind means only a portion of where you throw the snow goes where you aimed it. Forecasting has gotten better, and for this storm was quite accurate, though a little under for some places. As of 9:30 (not quite over) from https://boston.cbslocal.com/2022/01/29/blizzard-2022-who-has-the-most-snow-totals-for-january-29-storm-noreaster-boston-massachusetts/:

Fairly impressive.

Really high snow to water content values too. With the wind there ought to be lots of healthy drifts.

More than a foot of snow had fallen in New Jersey by early Saturday morning.

I lived in Central Jersey as a kid for the Blizzard of ‘66.

Six inches of snow shut the schools down for a whole week.

Since we were from Buffalo, my mom saw the snow and started getting us ready for school as usual, when she got the phone tree call that school was cancelled.

She asked why and the other mother said it was because of the snow. My mom replied with “We only got six inches. How much do you have?”

The other woman said “Yes! Six inches!!!! Can you believe it?!?!?!”.

They were shocked at the huge amount of snow. We had a great time that week being off school.
