In an interview with the Associated Press, Buttigieg said the Department of Transportation will provide $5 billion in grants over the next two years for states to implement lower speed limits, better lighting on crosswalks, additional bus and bike lanes and more. The grants will be funded by President Joe Biden's infrastructure package.
In an October report from the Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Buttigieg said over 20,000 people died on U.S. roads just in the first half of 2021. This is an 18.4 percent increase from the same period in 2020. The report added this is the highest projected number of traffic deaths since 2006.
Determined fawn tries everything to get dog to play "We cannot and should not accept these fatalities as simply a part of everyday life in America," he said.
Buttigieg told the AP he expected federal data from the third quarter of 2021 to show an even bigger increase in traffic deaths when it is released next week.

Never let a crisis go to waste.
Funny he is second in line for Dems after Kamala for 2024.
Fewer unlicensed drunk foreign invaders on our roads?
“curb a recent spike in traffic deaths. “
Maybe some people that want ‘suicide outs’ are just driving into accident situations to ‘end it all’
Of course the hundreds of thousands of new untrained and uninsured drivers from South America doesn’t add to the problem.
They won’t police crime, just us. They don’t want us to use gas because of climate change, but want us to sit in traffic longer. This is the same crap they did in the seventies. A nationwide 55 mph speed limit with the highway patrol acting as tax collectors. But forget them catching violent killers or serial murderers, while the crime rate went berserk.
We are being ruled by the criminally insane and their cheerleading media.
I read an article that correlated traffic fatalities and the Ferguson effect. When people know the police won’t stop them they (surprise surprise) are more likely to run red lights.
I’d love to see the geographical distribution of this spike.
Reduce Speed Limit to 15 mpg and outlaw CARS!!
he is an expert at rear-ending, so this should be a sinch for him!
Pothole Pete.
In 2020 with all the lockdowns, people were driving over 90 on the open freeways, 2021 just crazy people are driving like raped apes.
How about educating moron pedestrians not to cross the street when it’s red?
Reduce rear ending.
Strangely appropriate for mayor Peter Eater.
We already had out fill of “Lower speeds” with Jimmah Carter.
“”better lighting on crosswalks, additional bus and bike lanes and more. “”
Doesn’t sound like ROAD SAFETY to me. It’s STREETS that have crosswalks, bus and bike lanes - NOT ROADS!
A “grant” to study and fix the problem? Why not? There’s lots of money to burn in DC and more where that came from!
out s/b our
Everyone in electric cars and no faster than 20mph!
They are expecting a sharp increase in traffic deaths?
So they are proactively implementing more restrictions and asking for more money to address a situation that hasn’t happened yet?
This is like already deciding that the 2022 midterms are illegitimate.
A German approach to drivers education would be a start.
Germans go through tough training to get a license. And it shows.
After 55 MPH was repealed, speeds went up, but deaths continued down. I’d like to see the fatality rates in states (e.g. California, Washington, Colorado, Arizona, etc.) that have legalized recreational marijuana. Maybe it didn’t make a difference, but it would be interesting to see.
