Good, upstate avoids it all. Seems like the past few years the Nor-easters have been generally CT and MA events. Thank you climate change for moving thee storms closer to the coast.
I recommend they give these “cyclone bombs” macho names like “Fatman” and “Little Boy”.
Run to the store? Is there anything in the stores to buy?
Thanks for the link. Years ago in college I had a great meteorology professor. Early morning class. He would have just come in from a run. I was a late night studier and would sit in the front row and fall asleep. I cringe thinking back but he was a good guy, very smart and loved the science. I hope he’s still doing well.
They’re the worst kind… stay tuned
To New Mexico: Stock up now!!!! Before it is too late!!!! You have been warned!!!! 😎
Like my physics class at 7:30 am!
That storm blew through northeast Ohio on its way to you. It was a doozy! I drove to work in it — the road cuts were filled with snow, it was howling, and the road was completely empty of cars. Having spent a lot of time in the western mountains, I thought “What’s the big deal?” I got to work and the guard said “What are you doing here? Work is closed today.” That was the first time I had ever heard of businesses closing for a snowstorm. Schools - sure. But businesses? Never. He wouldn’t even let me into the building even though I had driven there.
Wonderful. I guess that I better go to the store and get some milk, eggs, coffee-cream and snacks.....
1978 was called a white hurricane. Bomb cyclone appears to have been invented about 2018. It was defined as the drop in some number of millibars. Basically a strong nor’easter. Back on 2013 they tried to sell “explosive cyclones” but it never caught on. Nevertheless the search for a good new fear mongering buzz phrase is ongoing.
I think Bomb Cyclone is a term The Weather Channel made up to increase ratings. I wonder if this means Jim Cantore will be broadcasting live from Chatham, MA (on the elbow of Cape Cod) on Saturday.
A Noreaster/Bomb Cyclone is just a winter hurricane. A LOW front develops, turns in a counter clockwise motion. As it travels in a north easterly direction it pulls in moisture off the Atlantic Ocean. The moisture becomes snow because of the freezing temperatures. Depending on the northeasterly track the amount of snow can vary greatly in 50-100 mile area and changes in elevation.
Many times in the past CT, RI and most of coastal MA would get rain and it would snow here in southern NH. This one looks like ME is going to get hit pretty good.
A noreaster is similar to lake effect, except the lake is the Atlantic Ocean.
Yep. Nothing new. Bastardi talked about the origins of the term a while back.
I was pretty sure it had been around a long time. I probably
wouldn’t have pegged it at the 1700s.
Pushing the climate change narrative every chance they get, with much more dramatic warnings and advisories for what used to be just plain old weather forecasts.
Don't forget Bread and eggs too.
I knew it had been around because as a kid I read many books about whaling and the clipper ships out of New England and all of the Hornblower books. Actually, the term was first used in the early 1600’s.
I wasn’t nitpicking but sometimes some on our side exagerate.
Regards-
“There is also a serious coastal flooding and beach erosion threat, especially in eastern Massachusetts.”
I’d be worried if it was Western Massachusetts~!
Some people just haven’t run across it like you and I have.
Older books use it. I read and heard it a lot when I was
younger.
I’m sure this person thought they were being loosely
factually correct, but they were mistaken.
