Ukrainian Troops Test Javelin Missile Against Russian Cage-Style Improvised Tank Armor
The Drive ^ | 23-DEC-2021 | THOMAS NEWDICK

Posted on 01/26/2022 7:42:09 AM PST by SpeedyInTexas

The Ukrainian Army continues to refine its anti-armor tactics using its American-made Javelin anti-tank missiles. Recent trials pitted the weapon against a static target equipped with improvised protection similar to the type that’s been appearing on the turrets of some Russian tanks of late, including those noted close to Ukraine’s border areas. That is a topic that you can read about in our previous article here. The new Javelin test comes as fears about a new Russian military intervention on Ukrainian territory grow and as Kyiv continues to battle Russian-supported forces in the eastern Donbas region, including using Javelin missiles.

I don't think that "cage armor" is going to work.

IIRC, the Javelin, when attacking from the top, actually detonates above the vehicle and shoots a molten(?) penetrator through the armour. Is that right?

At any right the Javelin doesn’t make contact to detonate.

AGAIN, IIRC.

It is pretty clear that if Russia does not seize the entirety of Ukraine, whatever is left of it will be the recipient of billions in foreign defense aid. That can’t be in Russia’s interest, I wouldn’t think.

Works as well as a mask.

The newer ATMs have dual charges to counteract caged and active armor protection schemes.

From the videos I’ve seen that appears to be correct, it can also be fired and person can then run away to avoid a return shot from the other side, hopefully before the javelin takes care of the tank on the other end.

Hopefully the Javelins will give the Russians real pause and enhance the morale of Ukrainian infantry. However if the Ukrainians were fitted with the type of drone system, the Azerbaganis used to decimate and defeat Armenian armor, that would really alarm to Russians and make an invasion extremely costly.

Wouldn’t it be something if we armed Ukraine to the teeth, then the Ukrainians willingly capitulated to Russia?

I have no idea what Putin is planning to do but find it odd that his hesitation allows an obviously weaker opponent to bolster their defenses thereby increasing the cost of an incursion.

“Ukrainians willingly capitulated to Russia?”

This is Ukraine’s national anthem.

“Ukraine is not yet dead, nor its glory and freedom,
Luck will still smile on us brother-Ukrainians.
Our enemies will die, as the dew does in the sunshine,
and we, too, brothers, we’ll live happily in our land.

We’ll not spare either our souls or bodies to get freedom
and we’ll prove that we brothers are of Kozak kin.”

I think that answers your question. “Our enemies will die”. I wouldn’t call that a national anthem to appeal to the “better angels of our nature”.

Farmland and natural resources.

Russia also pays Ukraine handsomely for the pipelines running through the country.

The Turks provided those drones to Azerbaijan. It would be very interesting if they started supplying the Ukraine with weapons. They have one of the top ten arms industries on Earth. They are also in conflict with the Russians in Syria, and have a long history of conflict with Russia.

I think the question is whether or not the projectile, molten or not, would be dispersed enough by the bars to prevent it from penetrating.

I guess they are thinking if you break up the mass, there will not be enough energy to finish the job.

12 wars I think. Turkey vs. Russia. Nations not exactly in love with one another.

So how did test work out?

I can’t get the article to finish loading - maybe some Russian cyberattack.

It might.
Like spaced armor, it forces the detonation far enough from the armor to allow the jet to diffuse somewhat.
But we have some pretty clever warheads and they can probably defeat that.
