Democratic Rep. Jim Cooper of Tennessee said Tuesday that he will retire after more than 30 years in elected office, declaring there was “no way” for him to retain his seat under a new congressional map drawn up by state Republicans.
Cooper is the 29th Democrat to announce he won't seek reelection to the chamber in the fall. Now in his 16th term, he is also one of the longest-serving House Democrats to retire ahead of a challenging midterm election year for the party.
His announcement comes just a day after Tennessee’s GOP-controlled General Assembly approved a new congressional map that would split booming Democratic-tilted Nashville three ways. Under the new plan, which still must be approved by the state's GOP governor, Cooper would have become a significant underdog in holding his seat against a Republican.

Finally!
Number 29. Lets go for 100 more.
good. thank you WarRoom posse for getting this done.
30 years is too long
TERM LIMITS !!!!!!!
Shame that TN can’t redistrict that vile creature Steve Cohn out of office. But Memphis is a bridge too far.
Gerrymandering can and usually does favor the voters that politically control the State. The exception is invariably in states controlled by Republicans who roll over to the corrupt Democrats. The alternative is to let cities run the country.
Vile is right.
Tennessee is saving Our Democracy.....
Then, he woke up to the Tennessee Pubbies breaking a stick off in his keester.
It is to laugh.
Not 30 years consecutively. 12 years from a rural district (1983-95), a losing Senate race and a return to Congress from my district (TN-5) which is Nashville since 2003. 32 years in total. He won’t be missed.
The Supreme Court ruled that term limits are unconstitutional 20+ years ago. It will have to be a constitutional amendment to be achieved - almost impossible.
As good a reason as any……buh-byeeee.
If Congress wanted to they could change their retirement rules to cut off any congresscritters that serve more than X terms in the Senate or Y terms in the House. Of course, they don't want to. Instead, the retirement payouts increase substantially the longer they are in Congress.
GREAT NEWS!!!!!!!!
Who would you like to see in his place, fieldmarshaldj?
We are dancing upon hearing this news!!!
Well, because of the redrawing of the lines, I will not be in the 5th district come January next year (for the first time in my life), but will now be in the 6th district, so my new Congressman will be Republican John Rose.
As for the now-open 5th, the current Republicans are generally second-tier types. If I had a free hand to draft someone, it would be Professor Carol Swain who ran for Mayor not too long ago. The moonbats would go nuts having a solid social Conservative Black woman in Congress. Absent Cooper, the Demonrats will probably field an ultraleft nutter (also likely a Black woman such as Keeda Haynes or Odessa Kelly) in the vein of Cori Bush from Saint Louis.
Our family LOVES Professor Swain! Her students at Vanderbilt loved her too. We’ll have to look to see if this redrawing has affected us in any way...and then plan...and pray.
PS Would thoroughly enjoy seeing the moonbats going utterly nuts!
Y’know, if you can contact her and urge her to run, I would do it. There’s another candidate in trying to rack up endorsements named “Robby Starbuck”, but he is a carpetbagger from California who talks a good game, but has no record. We’ve seen these types of candidates before who often turn out to be RINOs once ensconced in office.
Although not a great map in detail, this should give you a general clue what district you’ll be in shortly:
