Term limits should exists in the voters heads. Once the drive is not as intense it is time to remove oneself from the leadership office, if one cannot live without the top office, they are probably not suited for leadership of just 50 to 66 people who have a common goal, success of the unitied states while representing their constitants view points 1st and the party line 2nd. The Whips are the the future leaders of the senate. The republicans sat on a lack of leadership talent from 1996 - 2008. Nickles, McConnell and Lott are simply not the examples we need 10 years later, all were to tight with DC party structure as a whole. Need some more senators regarded as assholes as Whips. Mike Lee can certainly count to 61 and shove people words right back at them.
Donald L. Nickles (R-OK) 1996-2003
Mitch McConnell (R-KY) 2003-2007
Trent Lott (R-MS) 2007
Jon L. Kyl (R-AZ) 2008-2013
John Cornyn (R-TX) 2013-2019
John Thune (R-SD) 2019-present
Democrats problem is their Whip has been a mentaly handicapped crook from IL since 2005. Dirty Dick Durbin. If he would have clued in the leadership the votes were never going to be there, this pillow fucking last 5 months in the senate would have not been wasted.
Interesting points. The problem is that nothing seems to exist in the voters’ heads...we never really seem to feel in charge of or even responsible for electing or continuing these people.
But you’re right, the whips are the most important, and we never ever think of that (probably outside of FR, most people don’t even know who or what they are).
Great post, thanks!
Imho, Cornyn, (R-TX), has aged into a DC insider, now quite the political cobweb, who pops out of the cake only in a re-election year (with no memorable opponents.)
” He shudda, cudda’ been a contender “, for all of us.
The NSRC helps freeze$ these stiff$ in place like a ROTH IRA, leaving competitors rarely ever able to get off the block.
Lee doesn’t support Trump. Just say no.
