It was controlled from Moscow for centuries, but so were Poland, Finland, and the Baltics. The were conquered by Russian, but like Crimea were never ethnically Russian.

Incorrect, because none of these areas in Lenin’s time were Russian. Crimea had diverse population with Tartars being the largest group. What is today the Donbass was almost entirely populated by the Don Cossacks.
These groups were wiped out between 1920 and 1944, and it was only after that they were replaced by Russian speakers.

2. Nato blinks, and gives Putin assurance that Ukraine will not be in Nato. Putin leaves troops in the area.
3. He invades parts of Ukraine where Russians currently live.
4. He initiates a coup in Ukraine putting in his own guy

Yes, as a matter of fact I do see severe logistical challenges to ginning up a war with Russia while stupidly allowing an invasion of our own country to occur at the southern border.

But there are. A handful of Special Forces and some others are advising and training - if the flag goes up, they will be immediately evacuated.
Don’t sweat the fear mongering ... until the Russians bring in their hospital units ... which, so far, they have not ; once they arrive, the chances of Russian troops crossing past the Russian friendly border districts goes from 50% to 99.999%.
Russian troops are in the north, south, and east. If it starts, they will most likely attack from three directions while Black and Caspian Sea naval units launch hundreds of missiles.
Well, a C-5 can fly non-stop from the US to Ukraine. Makes a pretty big target, though.

For the Don Cossacks, they were their own ethnic group, but they spoke a dialect closer to Ukrainian than Russian.
