Well, from an historical standpoint, Ukraine WAS a part of Russia on and off throughout history; so, Russia at least has an argument that it wants it back.
And Moscow was part of the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth. Shall we give Moscow back to the Lithuanians? It’s a slippery slope to start with these ideas in Europe where history is so intertwined.
I would wager all that stuff is coming out of our military units supplies. I remember when during Viet Nam we had to turn in all our unit’s weapons so they could be sent to the South Vietnamese...50 M1 carbines, 2 grease guns and 2 M1911’s. Gone.
200 tons of old Soviet hsit from the Baltics, Estonia in particular, or newer American stuff that they have no training on.
Stupidity.
Giving up their nukes without stronger assurances was a very bad mistake by Ukraine. Even so, it is a horrendous precedent for us to not follow through with our side of the agreement if Ukraine has basically held up their end of it. No one with nukes will ever disarm again based on such promises, and many more will want them, knowing the US cannot be trusted...
Weakness is always the greater risk in the long run.
Ukraine should have demanded NATO membership when Russia was reeling, in exchange for giving up their (Ukraine’s) best defense. Then when Putin came along he’d be stuck with it and have to accept that reality. Unfortunately, numerous oligarchs in Ukraine probably opposed that because NATO would not have tolerated the gross Russki style corruption that lined their pockets. Short sighted thinking for sure.
“..Why....just why...we have no interest in Ukraine...”
Au contraire.
The Brandon regime, the Clintonians as well as a host of other communist leftists had, and likely still have, BIG money laundering schemes via of the Ukraine. They should send THEIR sons and daughters to fight for thier crap, not the rest of America’s.
VERY slippery. Russia sent in hundreds of thousands of Russian immigrants to dominate Eastern Ukraine during that history.
My Dad had a Ukrainian friend who’d fled the country a few years after the end of WW2. George (the friend) would shake his head, remembering that time, and tell us: “The Nazis were awful. The Russians (before and after) were worse!”
No, its all brand new stuff...only the best for the corrupt ex-commies in Ukraine.
“And Moscow was part of the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth. Shall we give Moscow back to the Lithuanians? It’s a slippery slope to start with these ideas in Europe where history is so intertwined.”
Hey, I’m just saying that Russia has at least a somewhat sustainable argument in its claim vis-à-vis Ukraine. And, since the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth no longer exists (it ended back in 1795), your comment lacks any merit.
But we gave 80 billion in weapons to Afghanistan. To terrorists.
Russia has less of a claim to Crimea than the Crimean Tatars that were deported by Stalin. If we are going to “give” Crimea to anybody it should be them.
The Baltics were part of Russia and the USSR for nearly 75% of the 20th century. Narva, Estonia is 90% ethnic Russian. Don’t think the same Putinist arguments can’t be made there, too.
Putin is on record saying that his goal is to bring back the compilation of the Soviet Union, but without the communism. Yeah, I’d say the Baltic states would be on his radar, as are the various “Stans.”
And I don’t support “giving” any country to anybody.
Didn’t obama send blankets?
How do we know if biden is not sending blankets unless he gets his cut?
Bidens must have got their cut.
Ukraine was announcing yesterday that a second plane had landed with weapons.
Why on earth would someone announce that, while the unloading operation is ongoing, I don’t know.
I can understand announcing it as a deterrent at some point.
