Could DeSantis Beat Trump?
National Review ^ | January 21, 2022 | RICH LOWRY

The past and current master of the GOP sees a future threat arising.

[cut]

“It was a mistake to ever embrace Donald Trump, and now we want to be the party of Adam Kinzinger.”

[cut]

Would DeSantis be audacious enough to run against Trump in 2024? The case against waiting is that it’s extremely unlikely that the governor can maintain his exalted status in the party until 2028.

On the other hand, the case against running in 2024 is that it involves the enormous risk of encountering the business end of the Trump buzz saw, which could change DeSantis’s image in the party forever.

In case no one was looking - Mike Pompeo has lost 90 freaking lbs. and is almost unrecognizable as a result. I realize he may have been motivated by health concerns, but he could have done it that any time. Methinks he is getting ready, and a Pompeo/De Santis, or De Santis/Pompeo ticket would be formidable. If it had the blessing of DJT. I think he (Trump) comes out ahead by playing kingmaker instead of being the actual candidate.

I predict both parties will nominate a young white woman who will come from out of nowhere just like Trump did. Possible from the billionaire or near Mega millionaire class or a ceo, not necessarily a politician.

They had better improve from the likes of Carly Fiorina, or Jill Stein or Hillary or Kristen Gillibrand or Marianne Williamson or Kamal Harris. Not a very impressive bunch. Maybe Elizabeth Holmes will be out of jail by then. They all go leftist squishy no matter what party.

The cabal that took from the American people their Constitutional right to vote… both parties, do not intend on ever allowing a ‘free’ person to ever again hold the office of US president. Just ask that venomous Lizzie Cheney.

Have a look at my tagline. There is no such thing as a “moderate”.

And how many “moderates” were in the 73 million that voted for Trump in 2020 then?

“extremely unlikely the governor can maintain his exalted status in the party until 2028”
I don’t understand the basis for this pronouncement at all.

After Biden, no one is going to elect a 78 year old man especially when biden is sent packing later this year under 25 amend. Being 70+ will be the number one liability for any nominee.

I disagree. The Democrats are even stirring up some rumors about Hillary Clinton making a comeback in 2024.

That's because Biden is so utterly defective that he makes even your average 90+ year old man look young and energetic.

There’s simply never going to be a GOP revelation in which the rank and file suddenly decides, “It was a mistake to ever embrace Donald Trump, and now we want to be the party of Adam Kinzinger.”

It must be very tough for anyone at National Review to admit this.

Bush rain for governor of Texas in 1998, and ran for president in 2000.

Don't bite on this.
Just a bitter never Trumper scratching their none existent balls.
None of this matters before 2023.
This is about maintaining the status quo for November this year by trying to lessen Trump's influence and eliminate MAGA candidates from winning.

Could DeSantis Beat Trump?

I'm hoping it won't come to that, but if DeSantis and Trump both ran for the GOP nomination in 2024, I'd need to think about it. I'd be excited about voting for either of them in November 2024. I would not be excited about either of them damaging the other in the primaries - if they can't keep it civilized and put the nation ahead of their egos, I'd remember it.

Hillary will never be the nominee nor will she be elected.

People are tired of the dynasty’s and want new.

“It was a mistake to ever embrace Donald Trump, and now we want to be the party of Adam Kinzinger.”

That was a dishonest edit. The full line from the story is:

There’s simply never going to be a GOP revelation in which the rank and file suddenly decides, “It was a mistake to ever embrace Donald Trump, and now we want to be the party of Adam Kinzinger.” There will be no Bourbon Restoration.

Always your claim of career politician, regardless of his military years. (Something Trump lacks.)

$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Quite possibly. I hope Pompeo has a significant political future. But there is also the distinct possibility that because the more overweight you are, the more likely you will die from Covid (or everything else for that matter). Pompeo is no fool, and I’m sure that extends to matters of his health as well.

Lowry is an idiot.

Someone running 6 years out has plenty of time to build support and organization by fundraising for state and local officials in early primary and swing states. Especially with as big a name recognition as DeSantis.

“The Deep State tries to gin up trouble between Trump and DeSantis. I don’t buy it.

“I support Trump.

“I support DeSantis.”

Kudos to you. Trump was brilliant on the issues, most of the time. (He screwed the pooch on immigration legislation, failing to pass even E-Verify.) He seemed to relish being seen as the world’s largest ***hole. Here, he had an important lessons for the Romneys, Doles and Bushes of the world: “You will be hated by the Left, no matter what you do.” But the problem is that if you’re going to go to war on so many fronts, you’d better be VERY careful to know your enemies and to not lead your loyal troops into useless, unwinnable battles.

He scored an F on both fronts.

And that was his downfall.

Trump understood how detrimental government interference was to a productive economy. But he leaned so hard on saboteurs like Anthony Fauci, Jeff Sessions’ Justice Department (who I’d like to believe was simply waaay over his head), Rex Tillerson and James Mathis. He seemed to barely understand how Congress worked.

Ted Cruz had the right issues before Trump teased about running for office (not counting his 2000 run). Maybe he’d’ve crumpled like Mitt; I think that’s what most people were afraid of. But Mitt was a Massachusetts liberal before he ran, just like the Bushes. McCain was always a Deep-State enemy of conservatism. Trump forced Cruz into a choice to stand with the President to advance conservatism, or defend his wife in a public way. Cruz chose America. Damned sucky choice.

I’d like a Trump who wasn’t such an a$$hol3. For God’s sake, if you want to say it was necessary to be an a$$hol3, I’m all ears. Please don’t tell me he wasn’t an a$$hol3, unless you’re making the case that being an a$$hol3 was what the country needed means he’s not really an a$$hol3.

I’d like a Trump who thought about credibility before he Tweeted. Maybe he needed to vent. Maybe he needed to be real, not just simply my idealized vision of what the perfect president was, and Twitter was how he did that.

So hell yes, I supported his re-election... even if he was running against a much less cartoonishly evil opponent. But if Cruz or DeSantis might offer Trump’s benefits without Trump’s flaws, I’d like one of them to be president. If I’m asking for a pony that doesn’t poop, well, I’ll happily settle for one that does.

We still have 3 years of corrupt RAT rule. I am not ready to think that far ahead considering the horrid state of the current US.
