Thieves stealing cargo on LA rail lines, making off with goods and leaving debris behind
Associated Press ^ | Jan 15 | AP

Thieves have been raiding cargo containers aboard trains nearing downtown Los Angeles for months, taking packages belonging to people across the U.S. and leaving the tracks blanketed with discarded boxes.

The packages are from retailers including Amazon, REI and others, CBSLA reported Thursday. The sea of debris left behind includes items that the thieves apparently didn’t think were valuable enough to take.

While CBSLA cameras were on the scene, one person was spotted running off with a container used to hold small packages, and a Union Pacific railroad police officer was spotted pursuing two other people who were apparently going through packages.

The scene was the same in November, when NBC4 showed thousands of boxes discarded along the tracks lined with homeless encampments northeast of downtown in the Lincoln Park area.

Passing trains carried containers with doors wide open and packages tumbling out, NBC4 reported. Video showed two men, one holding what looked like bolt cutters, walking along the tracks, the station said.

Union Pacific said in a statement to CBSLA that the railroad was concerned about increased cargo thefts in California.

Most Americans are sheltered from this. They are home, on twitter, posting about how racist and unfair America is and always was.

We, as in conservatives don’t deserve what’s coming, but a lot of Americans have earned it.

And that being in California, they are more concerned about the trash the thieves are leaving behind than the crime of robbery. Idiots. Shoot the perps on sight.

Somehow I suspect that what they are doing is simply “racial and social justice”?

First they steal stores and now they steal packages. Unbelievably crime ridden state.

If we don’t prosecute, it gets worse. Pretty soon it looks like a Third world country, like LA.

These thieves don't bother to take the loot elsewhere, meaning they have nothing but time to stand there in the rail bed to and sort through what they stole. They don't even bother to hide evidence of their crimes.

The railroad can blame the city of Los Angeles but who would leave merchandise unguarded in such an area?

I recall driving around LA, and the illegals and assorted low life on the bus benches would sit there with stupid smiles on their faces while sitting in trash up to their ankles, as they toss big gulp cups over their shoulders...

Real depressing s**t. I’m very fortunate to have left it all behind.

I saw film of this on Carlson last night; it was appalling. For a quarter mile, the train tracks were covered with the remnants of stolen packages, along with discarded merchandise of no interest to the looters. Not just here and there, but thousands of boxes and discarded merchandise.

The railroad needs to start high balling it through that area.

I have worked in rail yards and anything under 5 MPH its easy to get on and off a moving train. Between 5 and 10 MPH is dicey and dangerous and can result in a gravel face plant.

Anything over 10 MPH is death on a stick.

The pictures they’re showing didn’t just happen overnight. This has been going on for years and let it happen. Why bother bringing in extra security when insurance will pay for it. Notice no one is bothering to clear to tracks before there’s a train wreck.
