Whether or not Vladimir Putin moves his troops into Ukraine, he has once again confronted Europe with a most painful reality: while being too weak to defend itself, it can no longer rely on the United States to come to its rescue.
We are facing a reality in which Russia, despite its economy only having the size of Italy's, can bully and intimidate a continent thanks to its energy reserves and its readiness to project vast military power.
Sure, any Russian invasion of Ukraine would cost Russia a fortune and likely degrade into a grinding war of attrition. Invasion is unlikely to be president Putin's preferred option. Yet, this game of brinkmanship has another part of the equation. If Russia invades Ukraine, the costs for Europe will be equally devastating.
It will force gas-addicted European countries to find expensive alternatives and to severe billions in infrastructure, from pipelines, over pumping stations, to dedicated storages.
Russia also remains a key export destination and a supplier of other resources than oil and gas. Think of titanium. While the Kremlin has long prepared a gradual decoupling from Europe, the opposite remains unthinkable for most Europeans.
While a sizeable part of the Russian population would support an intervention in the eastern part of Ukraine, citizens in many European countries will find it hard to accept soldiers to die for what they consider a strange, peripheral country: Ukraine.
Countless times, I have heard very senior European business leaders sympathise with the leadership of Putin, to the point that one got the impression that they were more attracted to Russian strong leadership than Western liberalism.

If China moves on Taiwan after the Olympics that will probably trigger Russia to move on the Ukraine and other countries. The American military is busy studying CRT and Wokeness and have probably lost their combat efficiency thanks to the Jarhead loons in the Pentagon. In 1945 there were 12.3 million men and women in uniform with seven -four star generals running the military, today, there are 1.3 million men and women in uniform with forty four-four star Generals making the Jarheads study CRT and Wokeness. Thank you General Milley.
“Western Europe is fated to be conquered in any event; better for them it be by the Russians than the Muslims.”
It will be by the Muslims. Right now Russia is moving muslim migrants from Syria directly through Belorus, and thence to the Polish border. This is a direct attack on the economies of the Nato member states and it’s far cheaper than military action.
who has defeated Europe? The Russians, or the globalist, socialist, deep state based in DC and Brussels?
Exactly. Europe is nothing but a bunch of back biters, spoiled brats that have been ungrateful to us since the war. Let Russia have them.
Europe is dead... has been for a while..
It is migrant Muslim now and the current leaders appear perfectly happy with that.
Europe is not worth defending against the Russians, frankly.
I agree. Let Russia have them. The world and the West will be better off. The weak-spined, cowardly Europeans don’t deserve independence and they are slowly losing Europe to Muslims. That will be the end of Western civilization in Europe if it happens and they will become part of the Third World.
Not sure, anymore, that that is a bad thing...
There certainly is more freedom and individual liberty in Russia than in UK, Germany, France, Belgium, and Sweden...
Russia threatening to wage war, hey, why don’t we reward them like Omama and Biden like to do, it works. /s
Why should we have to ‘come to the rescue’.
Sorry, not ONE cent for any foreign country until every last vet has a home and healthcare.
The EU isn’t worth the blood of one American PFC.
China has won WWIII without a single bullet.
So what are they doing to remedy this?
Maybe some of those Euros going to buy Russian gas should by them some enlistments and weapons.
“Public opinion polls in Germany show the Germans are willing to accept a Russian “sphere of influence” in Eastern Europe as long as they maintain business ties and it only costs their neighbors not them.”
I work in a certain command in Western Europe and I have heard in some circles how the Germans are just unreliable in a potential war with Russia. Really though dont they remember the rape of Berlin and what the Soviet Army did to them in 45, guess not.
Frankly, the Germans deserved it, and a lot more.
Western Europe you mean, Eastern Europe is wanting to put up a front but only so much they can do. Putin is a shark and he smells blood in the water, and smells the weakness, there is really nothing we can do, the US wont bail out Ukraine and Europe is to weak and dependent on the US mostly, we have to except facts, life could be different in the Ukraine soon, it is what it is.
Air Marshal Bomber Harris and Marshal Zhukov was enough to make the Germans pay, rape is to far, as a non white guy I hate the Nazis and for what they stood for, but sorry that was too much.
If they want Ukraine, they can have it. Unlikely the whole country though. Russia will seize the eastern part of the country (Russian speaking) and they’ll call it a day.
My guess: all of them. I just don’t know whether this outcome had been planned all along or whether it all fell into place as it gradually went along...
Well, there was more than you may know. Use German sources, they would really gladden your deep black heart.
Why I shed no tears for the Germans, this was Warsaw 1945. How many Polish women were raped by the Germans? War is Hell, don't start them!
