California offers college students $10K for public service

Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Tuesday that 45 colleges and universities in California, including some of the most prestigious campuses in the state, will be part of a new public service program that will subsidize tuition for students who do community service alongside their studies.

The program called “Californians For All College Corps” will start in the fall 2022 semester with 6,500 students who will be deployed to part-time work in areas of pressing need like K-12 education disparities, climate change and food insecurity, Newsom said in a news conference with the leaders of the state’s public university and community college systems.

The program’s website outlines a competitive application process for the program that it says will focus on admitting low-income students and “dreamers” — students whose parents brought them to the United States illegally — who are eligible for the program under a California law that allows non-citizens to access in-state tuition if they graduated from a California high school and meet other criteria.

University of California President Michael V. Drake praised the program as a way to help thousands of students pay for college and reduce debt.

… or they could get jobs and likewise practice delayed gratification for their spending … including college in the first place.

Indeed. This is pretty much how the Roman mob was set up for politicians of old.

And how many billions to fight (read ‘enhance’) homelessness? Tucker had a good breakdown of the YUGE amounts of money being poured into the “homeless situation” last night. As we know, a LOT of these folks do not want to be “in the system” and won’t sign up. I understand their desire to NOT be “in the system”.

Clearly government is awash in $$$$ and wasting it by the tens of millions. They really need to cut government and reduce taxes.

“...deployed to part-time work in areas of pressing need like K-12 education disparities, climate change and food insecurity”

How many of those “deployed” will be in tough city environments and subject to murder by cons let loose by Soros DAs?

What a bunch of asinine things to have kids do. Have them work on “food insecurity”? Don’t Doordash and Instacart do that already?

What about just plain old GETTING A JOB!?? That’s the way many of us paid our way through college. My dad bussed tables in a sorority and ran air drills in a copper mine in the summers. I did architectural drafting work and mechanical machinery design work.

As the parent of two college age and high school age Californians, I say to the university of California: please reopen classrooms and in person lectures, drop the mask mandates, and focus on maintaining your former educational excellence before it is all squandered.

I worked two p/t jobs in college and graduated not owing anyone. The only freebie was $100/sem given to everyone in the program. Grand total was $600 since I buckled down and graduated in 3 years instead of frittering the time away.

Guessing today’s illegals will get the $$$ whether they do the work or not. Work is a 4 letter word and it’s equivalent to slavery.

Thank goodness the graduating class will have fixed globull warming so we won’t have to hear about is anymore.

More ways to pay third world users money neither they or their illegal parents earned legally, nor have a real right to.

I’m not in favor of UC’s new “plan,” especially for illegal immigrants, but working two part time jobs to work your way through college was possible maybe until about 1990 or so (at best).

In-state tuition at the University of CA is $17,000/year, and room and board another $15,000.

That’s $128,000 minimum for four years, living relatively frugally. Two part time jobs won’t cover that, unless those are VERY well paid jobs. And tuition and living expenses tends to go up 6% a year.

(What I did for my 4 kids is invest early on in 529 plans, slowly putting away $100-$200 a month for decades. The stock market has been good to me for the last 20 years.)
