Canadian special forces operators have been deployed to Ukraine amid rising tensions between the NATO military alliance and Russia, Global News has learned.
The deployment of a small contingent from the Canadian Special Operations Regiment comes as diplomatic talks aimed at staving off an armed conflict in Ukraine have faltered, and an estimated 100,000 Russian troops remain camped on Ukraine’s border. Sources told Global News that the Canadian special operations presence is part of an attempt by NATO allies to deter Russian aggression in Ukraine, and to identify ways to assist the Ukrainian government.
The unit has also been tasked with helping to develop evacuation plans for Canadian diplomatic personnel in the event of a full-scale invasion, sources said.

Actually Canada’s military is small but well trained and well equipped. They have excellent special forces and some of the best snipers in the world.
The Brits just sent a couple of plane loads of anti-tank missiles.
That would impose a more serious price on a Russian invasion, and could prevent a quick victory.
NATO troops, like these Canadians, could serve as a tripwire to draw NATO into a conflict, or the risk of that might have some deterrent effect.
They might also be trainers, on the use of those anti-tank missiles.

Erm, I don’t know where you get the idea that Canada’s military history is a lacklustre one. In the 1812 war they managed to prevent the USA from annexing them through dogged defence of their homes by invading Americans.
In WWI and WWII they were popularly known as the ‘shock troops of the British Empire’ because they were some of the best assault troops the allies had. During the invasion of Normandy they were the only allied army that actually achieved all its objectives on the 6th of June.
And as others have said, they have some of the best snipers in the world, and I doubt their special forces are any less skilled than either the British SAS or the Navy SEALs. They may be small, but they’re definately to be feared by anyone facing off with them.
