Remove the EV government subsidies of various kinds and the industry is dead as a doornail.

Better Idea. Go Search for the Fart Car on U tube. The guberment can subsidize sacks of beans for everyone.

“It makes me very curious when someone on my side spouts this prattle.”

Ev’s are not right or left. It’s just new technology. Do you really think the 220,000 + and growing preorders on the new F-150 lightning are being bought by liberals and hipsters?
The reason car co’s are wanting ev;s is it takes 1/3 of the labor to build and 1/2 the parts and warranty work will be about extinct saving them tens of billions in warranty work.

“So what’s the point of electric cars if they’re getting their power from fossil fuels?”

Because those fossil fuel plants, especially natural gas pollute less than millions of ev’s running around.

What about the diesel powered tractors, combines and trucks that plant, harvest and transport grain? There are currently no electric farm vehicles and where in the middle of a field do you charge that electric tractor or combine? The move to ban internal combustion engines could leave us starving.

“And wake up to see their garage on fire......”

The old lithium batteries yes.. The new solid state batteries every car company is going with in 1-3 years do not catch fire.

“any of those companies thinking about where the power required to charge those batteries is gonna come from?”

Nearly every state produces more electrcity than they use. Washington state sells 25% of it’s electrcity all year round to Canada

177 new power plants are being built across the US.

Lithium? Every car company is going solid state in 1-3 years. No lithium, 100% made in USA. fast charging, more range and 100% recylable.

Stations are found every couple blocks or so, homes one owns charging rights, not so much.

Gotta disagree. The driver, as I mentioned in my post, WILL have to pay a higher cost per kilowatt to cover the costs of owning and operating the EV system.

Right now I pay for electricity at the utility rate to charge. That’s my variable cost.

AND I have to amortize the cost (higher) of buying the electric model of my chosen sedan, AND amortize the cost of the degrading battery.

I have no illusion that the overall cost of my EV is lower per mile than the gas version of the same vehicle. I ran the numbers: I will have to drive the vehicle for almost 250,000 miles alongside a market price of gas of $3/gal before I would break even. I DO NOT expect to break even by going EV.

We ENJOY the nearly silent electric vehicle experience, and my wife has a 12 mile each way commute. She never buys gas. She likes it.

Not all choices are 100% economic.

But if the replaceable battery model were to take off, I think it would start in the freight industry, on dedicated lanes, where a company like Pilot pairs with a freight hauler like Hub Group.

It would work.

We can disagree.

“Comparable arguments were made about digital cameras, credit cards, voicemail, cellphones, email, and a myriad of new tech. Lots of persuasive reasons to not adopt new tech … then nearly everyone adopted them seemingly overnight.”

Well said. A very skeptical friend of mine swore my battery powered chainsaw could not keep up with his gas powered chainsaw. It did and more.

He has since bought 2 battery powered saws.

I remember the old school framer I knew 25 years ago who used a hammer said nailers would never take off...too bulky, heavy, needed air or electric supply. I have not seen framers use hammers in years.
