Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam issued an eleventh-hour pardon to state Sen. Joe Morrissey, who was convicted in 2014 for a misdemeanor count over a relationship with a 17-year-old receptionist at his law firm who later became his wife.
Morrissey, who like Northam is a Democrat, said he learned of the simple pardon Thursday after he sent a petition at the end of November.
Morrissey, now 64, left his seat in the House of Delegates eight years ago after being convicted of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. He won reelection as an independent in a special election a short time later and spent nights in jail while working during the day in the General Assembly as part of a work-release sentence.

Wow, that’s gratuitous. Frankly I don’t have any problem with this pardon. She was nearly and adult. He paid his debt to society. After she became an adult she chose to marrry him. Indulgences haven’t been sold for hundreds of years, your implication that it’s a current practice notwithstanding.

Marrying the ‘victim’ should automatically dismiss any such charges.
Other than age difference I would agree to this pardon if they married and are still married eight years later.
There were numerous cases where overzealous prosecutors or those being bushed by parents had 18 year old males charged for the same thing for having a sexual relationship with a 17 year old female.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A Virginia legislator was indicted Monday on charges that he had an improper sexual relationship with a teenage girl, accusations the Democratic lawmaker denied and pledged to fight.
According to a special prosecutor’s statements in court papers, state Del. Joseph D. Morrissey and the 17-year-old girl had sex multiple times at the legislator’s law office in August 2013, and both texted their friends about the encounter. The next morning, Morrissey texted the girl and asked for “a nude photograph of her to help him fantasize about their next encounter,” said the prosecutor, Spotsylvania County Commonwealth’s Attorney William Neely.
Neely also alleged the girl sent a nude photo to Morrissey that he then sent to a friend. Police recovered the messages and the photo, according to the charging documents, which identified the girl by her initials.
