Microsoft has included a new function in the latest version of its Word software that acts as a checker for inclusivity and offers PC alternatives to phrases which could upset others.

Traditionally, Microsoft Word has offered tools to its 250 million users such as checking software for spelling, punctuation and grammar.

But now, the tech giant has added an additional feature which reads through a user's work and examines whether the language used may offend an individual. The Sun reports it does this by highlighting phrases focusing on gender, age, sexual orientation, ethnicity of 'socioeconomic status'. The function, which produces a purple line beneath words or phrases it deems to be potentially problematic, can be turned on and off in Word's settings.

Microsoft Word also used red lines to point out spelling mistakes and green lines for grammatical errors.

After highlighting the inclusivity issue, Word's new functionality will suggest more acceptable alternatives ...

If it’s a work computer, trying to turn it off will alert HR.

This company sells new XP and Windows 7 computers — or so they advertise. I guess many businesses still use that platform. It looks like they custom build using the criteria you select.

This is the link to their “legacy” computers:

I use Word 2010, pretty safe as well. I won’t use anything newer.

A purple line? Why not a rainbow line?

I don’t use Word 2010 because it doesn’t have a menu, just that indecipherable ribbon.

One more reason to keep using Libre Office.

M$FT steps the wrong way, IMHO. Spelling and grammatical error correcting are gladly accepted. But this woke shit is not necessary. Thankfully it can be turned off.

I’m using Word 2003. Works just fine for my needs. I’ve been using Word since it first came out. We parted paths when they released the ribbon update. No way I’m gonna learn a new interface just to please them.

Roger that. It can be a pain to not have the old style menu, but I got a plugin that restores it so I’m good. But I’ve gotten used to the ribbon so I’m good there too. The email client is the most important thing to me cuz you can program in more than one email account, and I have a few.

My copy of Office 2016 suddenly lost its registration and the program began to hound me to register it. I tried to comply but the “wizard” refuses to accept the product ID.

So after an hour of fooling with it I uninstalled office and installed Open Office. So far so good.

That’ll show em!

Shoot, I remember using Lotus Notes 1-2-3, and WordPerfect. Wonder if there’s still a version floating around of WP that works....

I have a copy you could use - you still have your 5.25 floppy drive?

Lol

Can’t say that I do...

God I’m old. I remember using Geoworks on my C-64, though.
