Nucor Selects West Virginia for New $2.7 Billion Steel Mill

The mill in Mason County will take two years to build, pending permit and regulatory approvals, Nucor said Wednesday. It will employ about 800 people full time when fully operational.

Well, nuke the US economy by blowing up the filibuster and this deal is deader than a doornail. We count on Manchin to follow his conscience and do the right thing here.

The Bethlehem Steel mill at Sparrow Point in Maryland employed more than 25,000 people at its peak.

This Nucor plant — with 800 employees — will probably have the capacity to produce far more steel than Sparrow Point.

Sparrow’s Point when at its fullest capability could produce any steel product from sheet metal for tin cans to 18-inch-thick Krupp process armor steel for battleship turrets and deep belts. Doubt Nucor could do that.

Right now there are 14 steel mills under construction in the USA.
