Sweden to help households as electricity prices soar

STOCKHOLM (AP) — Sweden announced Wednesday it had earmarked some 6 billion kronor ($661 million) for a temporary scheme to help the most affected households across the Scandinavian country to cope with high electricity bills this winter.

Home owners in Sweden have already started adopting strategies to lower their consumption — turning down the heating, closing off rooms, using alternative heat sources like wood log burners and wearing thick woolly socks.

There have been reports of people taking bank loans to be able to pay their electricity bill.

“I understand that people are worried about their finances,” Sweden’s Energy Minister Khashayar Farmanbar said.

Sweden’s electricity prices have risen as cold temperatures increased demand and gas prices in Europe continue to rise.

According to data from the Swedish energy market regulator, the electricity costs for an average apartment in the southern half of the country where a large majority of Swedes live increased by 266% year-on-year in December, while the cost for an average house with electric heating jumped an average of 361% over the same period.

Looks like the people have it under control. Do they really need the govt?

I think what it is is that the Russians like the higher prices and are willing to pay the politicos to keep them that way, in particular through “green” energy policies which could only make sense to an electorate thoroughly brainwashed ... or brain-dead, as the case may be.

The article says that the Swedish government is implementing a “scheme.”

Truer words were never spoken about any government anywhere.

Sweden gets most of its electricity from hydro and nuclear. They shuttered their last coal-fired plant in 2020. One problem is they appear broadly to use electric heating for residences, an expensive proposition under any circumstances compared to use of fossil fuels or wood. They have little wind power or solar.

All over Europe, they are implementing this scheme.
Since they artificially created energy shortages, they will subsidize the poor. I am sure, these subsidies will be around forever! Once you started!

Like Venezuela, where the gas is now less than 10c per gallon!

Interestingly, this paragraph you quote is not in the AP article. Removed already?

“Sweden’s electricity prices have risen as cold temperatures increased demand and gas prices in Europe continue to rise.”

“...$661 million for a temporary scheme...”

Pikers! Our Congress does that on a weekly basis! ;)

SO HAPPY I locked in my Propane order early this season and that my delivery guy grew up on the farm we now own, so he’s very good about keeping us at 80% full all winter long. (That’s the max.)

So far, no rumblings of any propane shortages. *Fingers Crossed*

What’s the matter those hamster wheels not turning fast enough?

At least Magnus and Annika can freeze to death comforted by the fact that at least they are not being poisoned by radioactive waste from a nuclear plant.

Well if they get most of their electricity from Hydro and Nuclear the price should be fairly stable as I assume most of those generating facilities are several years old so the capital costs have been amortized to a great extent and in the case of Hydro the marginal cost of production is essentially zero. Got to be some natural gas generation there in the mix somewhere or they are capacity deficient and are importing a fair amount of power from another area that has significantly greater costs thus causing the large increase in the average cost for all consumers.

... and “Sweden” has all this money found in the loose change under the Ikea sofa cushions? This means that taxpayers are subsidizing taxeaters. Once again.

The marginal cost of hydro and nuclear are very, very low, essentially zero, so unless they are importing electricity or using gas as a backup, it doesn’t make any sense. Likely, the hydro and nuclear plants are running at 100% and they are back to plan B.

"I think what it is is that the Russians like the higher prices and are willing to pay the politicos to keep them that way, in particular through 'green' energy policies which could only make sense to an electorate thoroughly brainwashed ... or brain-dead, as the case may be."

This is exactly why I put solar panels onto my own roof. My power bills kept going up and up and up, especially after Obama made my power utility shut down a coal plant and replace it with a natural gas plant and a little solar. But ME making most of MY electricity with MY solar allows me to have more control of it, make sure it's efficient and pays for itself in 10 years (that includes paying the interest on the HELOC I took out to buy the solar equipment), and doesn't penalize me for not doing my fair share to absolve sinners from their cow farting sins by paying penance to Algore's carbon credit scheme.

Few things in life are more truly libertarian than taking care of as many of your own needs as you can, especially needs that most people depend on government depts for (like state departments that manage utility monopolies).
