Parts of New England to see extreme cold, closures this week

BOSTON (AP) — The New England states are bracing for extreme cold that is already closing some schools and threatening the power grid this week.

Boston, the state’s largest public school district, announced Monday that schools will not open Tuesday because of expected extremely cold temperatures.

The high in the city Tuesday is expected to be 12 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 11 C), with wind chills making it feel as low as minus 8 (minus 22 C), according to National Weather Service forecasters. It could feel as low as minus 15 (minus 26 C) in some areas of Massachusetts, according to the weather service.

And it could be even colder elsewhere in New England, as forecasters said wind chill could approach minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 40 C) in some parts of western Maine. Central Maine Power, the largest utility in the state, said it expects to see a rise in electricity usage on Tuesday because of the use of electric space heaters and fireplaces.

Low temperatures below zero, not including the wind chill, are also expected in Burlington, Vermont, and Concord, New Hampshire. Southern New England is unlikely to be spared, as forecasters said Providence, Rhode Island, should expect a wind chill value of as low as minus one degree Fahrenheit (minus 17 C).

"I’ve been in MA my whole life. We don’t like it when the temperature goes below zero, but it happens. It’s “interesting” because it’s not all that common, but it’s not at all shocking either. Temperatures tomorrow are going to be 15 above zero? Well ... I’ll bundle up. Yawn."

Definitely seen it closer. But this is a warm day in many parts of the US and world.

I remember Christmas of 1980. I was still in Boston, just six weeks away from Marine boot camp.

I kept myself warm with lots of egg nog and Kahlua.

A friend in the Catskills described a blizzard on Halloween; even the Indians thought the weather sucked there...

Up by Watertown/Fort Drum it is miserable as well.

Actually, red Hampshire is actually red in all branches of the government.

Republicans took control of them all at the state level last election.

Are New Englanders allowed to burn wood for home heating anymore? I would not be the least surprised if that is now criminalized.

Probably in MA, CT, and RI.

Good luck trying that in ME, NH, or even VT, cause although VT is loony tunes liberal, I can’t imagine them not using their wood stoves.

RINO’s at best...my wife and I used to live there (she was born there), and we will NEVER return under any circumstance. A hard lesson learned.

Interesting because compared to the People’s Republic of NY that we escaped from, it’s great.

Thanks! I was looking on the net and that was suggested. Although silicone grease (which I have - somewhere around here...) is supposed to be better as the vaseline might degrade the rubber seal. I guess I better get around to doing that soon before it all frosts up again.

That is most certainly a horse of a different color-if you have no heat, then low temperatures in these regions can be a catastrophe, broken water pipes, cold temps in the house, the whole nine yards.

If there is heat and electricity, there is no reason to cancel school for low temperatures.

If there aren’t, well...they don’t have fireplaces in school houses anymore!

What really struck me in this respect was reading “South” by Ernest Shackleton, where they became so adapted to living in privation and extreme cold during their months of living out in the open or under canvas in the arctic, that when the temperature rose to 25 degrees, they became uncomfortably hot and could not sleep!

Amazing. People are adapatable.
