This is the smoking gun that proves Tennis Australia wrongly — and knowingly — told the world’s best tennis players, including Novak Djokovic, how they could play in the first grand slam of the year even though they knew the proper rules for players who were unvaccinated against Covid was not as clear cut.
An information sheet, obtained by News Corp, was emailed by Tennis Australia to the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) early last month, then passed on to the world’s top players.
The document shows that Tennis Australia informed players there was a two-step process to follow so they could play in the Australian Open without being vaccinated.
The advice included a clause where players needed to prove they had contracted the virus in the last six months — which is presumed to be the basis for Djokovic’s exemption, which was withdrawn when he arrived in Australia.
But the problem is that the information forwarded to the ATP and players was incorrect, and Tennis Australia had already been told that.
Dated 7 December 2021, the email was sent after the federal government had already notified Tennis Australia in writing in November that a prior infection did not meet the requirements for quarantine-free travel.
The timing is critical because it points the blame for the whole fiasco at Tennis Australia, and backs up claims by acting Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan that the state government was also not told by Tennis Australia that the Commonwealth had warned them prior Covid infection was not a genuine medical exemption.

How do you interpret this?
I just want to know if Novak will play in the 2022 Australian Open.
Friggin’ pisses me off that this idiotic political pandemic and its idiotic vaccine stupidity is infecting the enjoyment of things like tennis.
Governments and their bureaucrats are always stupid, predatory and often criminal.
It makes me less inclined to blame Djokovic - but I still think he and his people should know better than to assume Tennis Australia can give permission for somebody to enter the country. I’d want to know whether they took any other steps to ensure he had an exemption. And if they received misleading information there as well.
A friend of mine who is quite senior in the Australian government department that handles entry to Australia, thinks it's quite likely he will - on the basis that he's already here, any appeal to work out whether he's entitled to be here is likely to take weeks, and a court is likely to allow him to play pending the outcome of that appeal. It could lead to the fairly ludicrous situation (legally speaking) where he's allowed to play and then gets deported because he shouldn't have legally been here.
Ditto what you said.
Looks like Novak relied on Team Australia who lied. If I was him I would go home and sue Team Austria for damages.
All the players should refuse to play.
The media in Australia is mostly far left. They hate the Federal government and they are trying to everything in their power to get a new leftist Labor government elected this year, to replace the current conservative Federal government. On the other hand the media loves the far-left state governments of Victoria and Queensland and support these far left governments.
See post 9.
Sorry, I meant post 10, not 9.
So they got all those unvaccinated tennis players to come to Australia and then arrested them.
No, they're not. We have a free press in Australia that generally loves attacking the government.
Somebody who compares what Djokovic has experienced to the Passion on the Cross are not people I regard as having any sort of balanced view on this.
And, yes, I would sue them if I was him.
But I also don't believe anybody as experienced with international travel as Djokovic is, should have thought a tennis body was the one who decided who enters Australia. They should have checked this. If they did, and they got incorrect information on checking, some blame might still lie with the government.
Australia is already looking pretty stupid about all this stuff. That would make them look even worse.
Thanks for the update.
What’s your opinion of Sky News Australia? I watch them every night here in the US since they give better coverage of the US than anyone in the US does.
Sorry. spell check is not always your friend.
I doubt if he thought Tennis Australia decided the rules but normally you would not have expected they would lie. Given it is Australia, you are probably correct it would have made sense to check but getting consistent answers from government can be difficult.
There are likely lots of people who want to come to Australia and in accordance with the law and regulations, are not able to do so.
Some rich tennis player should receive zero variation from strict interpretation that is keeping all those other people out. Deport ASAP.
