US, Japan agree to two defense pacts amid China worries

The U.S. and Japan are close to signing a new five-year pact for Japan to support U.S. military forces in the country and a new agreement to research and develop new defense technologies, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Thursday.

Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin met virtually with their Japanese counterparts — Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa and Defense Minister Kishi Nobuo — on Thursday amid rising tensions between the allies and China. Austin participated from home as he recovers from COVID-19.

“We’re launching a new research and development agreement that will make it easier for our scientists, for engineers and program managers, to collaborate on emerging defense-related issues: countering hypersonic threats, advancing space capabilities,” Blinken said ahead of the meeting. “When Japanese and American researchers bring their complementary strengths to bear, we can out-compete and out-innovate anyone.”

Austin reaffirmed the importance of the alliance and said the two countries are taking “bold steps” to strengthen its readiness and deterrent power. Thursday’s meeting was to set a framework for future action, he added.

How many hundreds of millions of American deaths are you willing to suffer in a guaranteed vain attempt to prohibit China from exerting the same balance of power machinations we do ourselves. If Guam has been attacked it’s only because some jingoistic neo con like you has blundered us into WWIII. You’re talking about a general engagement that would surely escalate to nuclear. My granddaughter should not have to die because Japan doesn’t invest in a deterrent of their own? You don’t mind risking hundreds of millions of Americans, how many trillions are you ready to borrow today to back up your neo con dreams? Where do you get your ideas? Are you on a John Bolton mailing list?

Yes that is true dreadnoughts were the first of their kind as battleships, supplanted by later versions we now think of as WWII-era battleships.

Not exactly ocean vessels by the Monitor and Merrimack I believe were the first metal-clad warships. The concept of wooden warships after that was dead. Same idea.

The entire point of my post was it could be that some nations, or many for that matter, see the aircraft carrier as having limited life-span given expense and advancing technology. I don’t know if they are right, it is just the reasoning some give.

Do you really think China has to nuke the Continental US to get the US regime to surrender unconditionally? I think they just have to take out our Pacific carrier fleet and Guam and then threaten to nuke a couple US cities, and the communists in the current administration will likely surrender everything. It’s not like they are really on different sides, after all.

You know, I’m seeing a significant cadre of surrender monkeys and defeatists on the Russia and China topics these days and you’re definitely one of them.

No, I didn’t say that at all. My major concern is having the idiots in DC today or the neo con idiots like I used to be blundering around in that tinderbox. People throw “stopping the communist invasion of Taiwan” around like it’s a board game. What exactly does that look like, American subs sinking Chinese troop ships? What’s the American move when the Chinese take out a carrier group with a tactical nuke in response to our previous move in the South China Sea? Any action severe enough to STOP a communist invasion of Taiwan would unquestionably escalate to a general nuclear exchange. The Japanese and South Koreans could unveil a limited nuclear deterrence within a year if they were motivated. A Japanese finger on a Japanese nuclear deterrent is the most stabilizing event we can hope to see in that area.

It often amazes me just how eager the French can be to snatch defeat from the jaws of defeat.

They had an opportunity to add two decent ships to their fleet and took a pass. Fools.

I noticed rather than answering the question you try deflect from your neo con wet dreams by calling me names. Stoogin’ for those good old globalist Bushite years. Look, you got nothing on me. I was a globalist neo con stooge for fifty years before I got wise. Take from me though, you got real strong stooge potential. You’re a natural.

More scary questions for you to run away from. You support stopping a Chinese aggression against Nationalist China. What does that actually look like? American subs sinking Chinese troop ships? A 10s over the landing beaches? Carrier aircraft attacks on Chinese command and control? B-52s over the staging and port areas? Maybe waiving your magic wand? What the heck do you think the Chinese would do in retaliation to any of those moves?

Taiwan is China’s neighbor, this matter needs to be dealt by these two first before US interferes. This problem is because of the civil war the two parties experienced.

This is the same situation when the Soviet Union interfered in Cuba. Of course, if you use the same logic, no country would want to have a military presence of another country beside it.

I’d start with one thing: A total trade embargo coupled with denying China access to the US banking system. As a follow up I’d have the US Navy and US Coast Guard along with our allies around the world interdict and seize Chinese fishing fleets.

It’s a bugger of thing to carry on a war when the folks at home are unemployed and hungry.

Again, China’s better play is to make a move on Siberia. I doubt we’d GAF if China stole something from the Russian kleptocracy.
