The U.S. and Japan are close to signing a new five-year pact for Japan to support U.S. military forces in the country and a new agreement to research and develop new defense technologies, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Thursday.
Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin met virtually with their Japanese counterparts — Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa and Defense Minister Kishi Nobuo — on Thursday amid rising tensions between the allies and China. Austin participated from home as he recovers from COVID-19.
“We’re launching a new research and development agreement that will make it easier for our scientists, for engineers and program managers, to collaborate on emerging defense-related issues: countering hypersonic threats, advancing space capabilities,” Blinken said ahead of the meeting. “When Japanese and American researchers bring their complementary strengths to bear, we can out-compete and out-innovate anyone.”
Austin reaffirmed the importance of the alliance and said the two countries are taking “bold steps” to strengthen its readiness and deterrent power. Thursday’s meeting was to set a framework for future action, he added.

Did we have to get prior approval from the Russia trolls to sign a defense pact with Japan?
If the Japanese had any sense they’d unveil their own nuclear deterrent force ASAP. Even at the height of the Cold War de Gaulle was not foolish enough to believe an American president would sacrifice 100 million Americans in a vain attempt to save Paris. If the US does blunder into a shooting war the Chinese over Taiwan things will escalate in a very southernly direction immediately.
I wouldn’t trust Biden or the Democrats for any reason to defend me against China.
All the Democrats care about is their next bribe and China is the most consistent source.
They’re more likely to assist China than anything.
“If the US does blunder into a shooting war the Chinese over Taiwan things will escalate in a very southernly direction immediately.”
If China keeps their hands off Taiwan there won’t be a war. If China invades or attempts to invade Taiwan it’s looking like the Japanese are going to intervene even if the US stays out of it. Which of course will force the US to get involved.
Australia might want a piece of this action.
I would neither trust the Republocrats. Cocaine Mitch’s wife has immediate family ties directly with the CCP.
Drop every nuke we have on Beijing and every military installation in China. Obliterate the entire country.
Japan Maritime Defense Force is usually ranked as amongst the strongest in the world. They are not to be trifled with:

Thank heavens they are allies rather than enemies.
So, the RATs haven’t found a way yet to throw Japan under the bus. Give them time.
As I said, immediate escalation in a very southernly direction. There is absolutely nothing west of Hawaii worth the US getting involved in potential nuclear confrontation with China over. I certainly remain skeptical about putting my grandchildren’s lives on the front line over a Chinese dispute between Chinese over exclusively Chinese matters that goes back at least a millennium, 10,000 miles away.
A bit surprised to learn France has only 1 carrier.
As I recall, a similar American attitude was held about Imperial Japan, all the way up to the morning of December 7, 1941.
What happens if China hits us first? Will you raise the white flag and given them everything they want or will you support bombing them back into the Stone Age like we should have done back in the Korean War?
“A bit surprised to learn France has only 1 carrier.”
France screwed up by selling their two Mistral class carriers to Egypt. Turns out they could have used them.
Most countries do not have carriers and are not building them. With the development of hypersonic missiles, lasers, drone swarms, quiet submarines, etc. maybe they are seen as obsolete. After all it was the battleship that made dreadnoughts obsolete, and in turn carriers made battleships obsolete.
As I said, west of Hawaii. Taiwan is not mine or my grandchildren’s. What’s your nationality? Who do you define as “us”?
“As I said, west of Hawaii.”
So you’re okay with China invading and annexing Guam, the US Marianas, and American Samoa? These territories and their people are every bit American as Toledo, Ohio is. Boo on you for giving them up without a fight.
And you’re also okay with abdicating our defense treaties, pacts, agreements, and memorandums with South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Tonga, Australia, New Zealand, Philippines, Thailand, and France (Tahiti)?
As for how I define “us” obviously that doesn’t include you or yours. I’m an American, what are you? A Democrat?
Correct me if I’m wrong but the Japanese did not possess a nuclear capability guaranteed to kill most of my grandchildren as they sleep. A very slight distinction a sharp guy like you might miss.
You have it backwards dreadnoughts are the first true battleship as we now understand them. The launching of the HMS Dreadnought (first all big gun battleship) then made all the other navies’ battleships obsolete. Everyone rushed to copy it and soon the words merged - battleship = dreadnought.
