Angered teachers union factions are ramping up pressure on city officials to adopt remote learning amid an ongoing “nightmare” of COVID-19 infections in city schools.
Progressive and left-leaning elements within the United Federation of Teachers have amplified their calls to temporarily shutter schools after the DOE recorded more than 12,000 new teacher and student cases Monday.
With Mayor Eric Adams staunchly opposing any school closures and UFT boss Michael Mulgrew avoiding a war of words with City Hall, some union groups are intensifying their tactics.

“This is a large union,” noted a union source. “People have to remember that. Sure, you have a lot of groups that make a lot of noise and get likes and retweets. But that’s not enough to force a closure or spark a strike. Not even close.”
City teachers saw steep absentee rates in the first few days of the new semester this week, with union sources estimating that 25 percent of educators have not shown up to school this week.

Shut the schools. Experiment ended.
They got their way.
But that wasn't good enough.
So the demanded that school children be muzzled
AND NOW THAT ISN'T GOOD ENOUGH.
You’ve got thousands of parents who need to return to full time work but cannot, with the schools closing and fighting to stay closed. This doesn’t even touch the personal damage to the students who are kept away from their peers and made to keep their faces covered in public.
As someone mentioned on an earlier thread, in-person learning really puts a damper on their day-drinking.
I’m liking Eric Adams so far. What an improvement.
Related, good editorial and GREAT science.
Real science.

With remote learning, we really don't need but a very, very few talented and telegenic teachers.
And, much of what they teach can be recorded and re-broadcast from year-to-year.
I’d be so annoyed if I was a parent....little Johnny underfoot 24/7..go play in the freeway kid.
“We’re staying open,” the mayor said.
“We’re not sending an unclear message of what is going to happen day to day,” Adams continued. “I’m going to tell you what’s going to happen day to day, we’re staying open.”
Good for him. But let’s see what will the union do next.
