Chandler Halderson is accused of killing and dismembering his father, Bart Halderson, and his mother, Krista Halderson.
After initially reporting them missing, saying he hadn’t heard from them since July 2, Chandler was arrested for lying to police about their whereabouts.
After human remains later identified as Bart and Krista were found scattered around Dane County, Chandler was charged with two counts each of first-degree intentional homicide, mutilating a corpse, hiding a corpse and providing false information on a missing person. A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf after he stood mute in court when the charges were read.

‘I felt like I needed to do something:’ Brother of Chandler Halderson testifies in homicide trial

MADISON, Wis. — The brother of Chandler Halderson says he wasn’t very worried about his parents’ whereabouts until Chandler himself said he was concerned.
Testifying in his brother’s homicide trial Tuesday morning, Mitchell Halderson said it was not like his parents to go up to their cabin in Langlade County on 4th of July weekend without saying something to him, but his concern grew when Chandler said he still hadn’t heard from them by the time he claimed they would be back.
Mitchell described Krista Halderson as a “helicopter parent,” and said she would have let him know if they were leaving town.
“My mom would reach out any chance she could, so she would’ve told me,” Mitchell Halderson said.
Touring the Langlade Co. cabin
Mitchell testified that by that point, none of his messages to his parents were being returned and his calls were going straight to voicemail. He says that got him concerned to the point of driving nearly three hours to the family’s cabin, taking a tour around the property with members of the Langlade County Sheriff’s Department.
“I wanted to do something myself about it. I felt like I needed to do something,” Mitchell testified Tuesday.

In bodycam video played in court Tuesday, Mitchell Halderson and deputies found the cabin and boathouse locked, with overgrown vegetation outside. Authorities broke the locks with Mitchell Halderson’s permission to get inside, but did not find any sign that anyone had been there.
According to court documents, cabin neighbors would later tell authorities that they had not seen anyone on the property recently, contradicting Chandler Halderson’s claims that his parents were picked up to go there with a group of unknown friends.
Mitchell says he talked to a number of family friends that could have gone to the cabin with his parents, but none of them said they were the ones to leave with Bart and Krista.
“I had reached out to each one of those families and had heard back that none of them were the ones who had gone up north,” Mitchell testified.
Mitchell Halderson said his parents would have been the ones to drive to the cabin if they were taking friends since they knew the way. Both Bart and Krista Halderson’s vehicles were still in the garage of their Windsor home.
The phones of Bart and Krista Halderson were also eventually found by police, turned off and hidden inside the family’s home.

Life insurance policy
Prosecutors also asked Mitchell Halderson about his parents’ life insurance policies. He said in the event both of his parents passed away, he and Chandler Halderson were in line to receive approximately $1 million in life insurance.
The amount has not been paid out yet, Mitchell Halderson said. It is unknown if the family’s home or cabin in Langlade County were part of the assets in line to go to the Halderson siblings.

Prosecutors claim Chandler Halderson killed parents after lies about college were exposed

MADISON, Wis. — Prosecutors in the Chandler Halderson trial claimed during opening statements Tuesday that the 23-year-old killed his parents after a web of lies about college and work were possibly exposed.
Dane Co. Assistant District Attorney William Brown said he will seek to prove that Chandler Halderson had consistently lied to his parents about getting a degree and work when they had pressed him about earning money and paying rent.
“The evidence in this case, you’ll find, is overwhelming,” Brown said. “Chandler Halderson killed his parents on July 1, 2021. He cut up their bodies with axes and saws and knives, and he didn’t even give them the dignity of having a funeral or even a final resting place in one piece or together.”
Halderson allegedly claimed that he was going to Madison College and was working at American Family Insurance, although prosecutors say records show Halderson did not attend Madison College for more than a semester and nobody at American Family Insurance had a record of him working there. Halderson also allegedly claimed to help on dive units for Madison Police and the Wisconsin DNR, neither of which Brown said has dive units.
Halderson also claimed that he was getting a job at SpaceX and was going to move to Florida, before he suffered a head injury which he claimed left him permanently disabled, including complications like brain bleeds, hematoma, spinal damage, and inability to use his legs.
Prosecutors claimed, though, that Halderson was exaggerating his symptoms and doctors said they treated him for a mild concussion, but there was no need for the neck brace he was photographed wearing in late June, weeks before his parents died. Prosecutors also pointed out surveillance video from a local convenience store showing Halderson carrying two bags of ice with no problems and not wearing the neck brace in early July.
Wow! A serial liar. It is all about him!
I watched the Prosecutor’s and Defense Counsel’s opening statements. If the jury could take a vote right now, they would find the defendant guilty on all counts.
I think there’s little doubt that he did it. BUT, we’ll see how things unfold. ;)
