While bear spray helped curtail this attack, carcasses can present a real hazard in grizzly country.

Notice this deflection by Cooley?

The bear is not the hazard; the carcass is the hazard!!

No, a dead moose is not a hazard. Ursus Horriblis, which has been taught for 50 years, or 15 bear generations, not to respect humans, is the hazard.

I know if I were a bear trying to eat someone, and he sprayed me with some bear spray, I’d be outta there.

That seems to be the level of thinking rule-writing pencil-pushers seem to engage. They have little useful experience in the wild, and it’s costing us lives.

Pepper spray is just seasoning to a determined and hungry bear.

But the spray was helpful. It’s what passes for logic I guess.

Outdoors/Rural/wildlife/hunting/hiking/backpacking/National Parks/animals list please FR mail me to be on or off . And ping me is you see articles of interest. tvh.com reports the investigation confirms bear spray was used. Although the attack was fatal, the lead investigator, Hillary Cooley, is reported as characterizing the use of bear spray as helpful

Not my idea of helpful. Hillary is the a grizzly coordinator, so the question of helpful to who enters my mind. A more detailed discussion of the aftermath below. The attack was ruled defensive, the bear acting in defense of a moose carcass. He was killed a few days later when he attacked a team trying to scare him from the area.

Grizzly fatal: Bear likely defending carcass before attack

This also shows why “less lethal” self defense measures (electronic & chemical restraints, impact weapons) are a lesser option to unabashedly lethal weapons. Because some attackers won’t be deterred by anything short of death.

I don’t get in to Bear country but if I did it would be with a Semiauto 12gage slug shotgun.

I read these sad “bear spay vs bear” stories and then that song from childhood starts playing in my head:

“Daniel Boone was a man, was a biiig man.”
“But the bear was bigger, so he ran like a … “

And, of course, I stop myself … you can’t touch that … don’t go there.

“The grizzly was killed Friday after it charged a group of seven game wardens and other personnel as they approached the scene of the attack. Several people fired at the animal and it died about 20 yards (18 meters) from the group, Jacobsen said.”

How about doing that BEFORE they kill people. Given their shitty attitude, they don’t deserve to live (except in zoos).

I would prefer to spray any aggressive bears with my 44 magnum which is what I always carry when hiking.
