Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) responded to critics Monday, including potential Democrat gubernatorial challenger Nikki Fried (D), who accused him of being absent when, in reality, he was attending his wife’s cancer treatments during the holiday break.
“I guess I should have been at the beach in Delaware. They would have been really happy about that,” he quipped, referencing President Biden’s beach vacation.
DeSantis noted that they put out a schedule as well, but his critics assume the governor is not doing anything if he is not holding a big press conference. On Wednesday, when there was nothing on the calendar, DeSantis said he caught word that he was apparently on vacation.
“And I just looked at my wife. I’m like, going to the hospital with you is not a vacation for you, I know that. And it’s not a vacation; this is something that as a husband, I think that I should be doing,” he said:
I have accompanied her to all her chemotherapy treatments, and she’s there for a long time. I’m there most of the time. It’s a draining thing. When she’s done with it, you know, it’s not something that’s great to see. And so, I just think a lot of people, particularly people who have gone through breast cancer treatments, the notion that that would be considered a vacation, I think, is offensive to a lot of those folks.
Casey, who announced her breast cancer diagnosis in October, is “not being in the fetal position the whole time,” adding that she is “going to end up good on the other end of it.”
DeSantis ultimately said the critiques were “dumb” and not effective.

Oftentimes, the VP slot is filled with a popular name whose home state adds significant electoral votes.
In this case, it would be a loss of 30 electoral votes...unless Trump changes his residency away from Florida before the next election. And he’s likely to have Florida anyway.
Yes...but that’s generally someone who themselves is not a contender.
Or New Jersey
lol
My sister’s treatments took at least 4 hours, and that is not counting the time to get there, find parking, sign in, get prepped (have BP and other vitals taken, etc) and then there was the same sort of time to add in after the chemo was done.
It was definitely a whole day thing, and she was often very tired and needed help around the house & time off work for at least the next day.
She had triple-negative early stage-4 breast cancer, and one of the chemo treatments was called “the Red Devil” and it was a toughie!
President and VP cannot be from the same state (assuming the Constitution still has adherents!).
adriamycin..... the red devil one
Actually, that’s a good point. It’s normally an easy thing to fix, but there’s way no DeSantis is going to change his state of residence because of his governorship, and I can’t see Trump doing it either.
Indeed I can see the day being tough, but a whole week? Most people don’t get treatments every day or even weekly. They seemed to be implying he was really on”vacation”….more than 1 day.
My sister, may she RIP, had inflammatory BC and basically never had treatments more than every 3 weeks. The concoction changed, too, So it could affect differently. She mostly was just overcome with exhaustion the next day (not same day) then up again until the next round.
That’s why I mentioned reaction.
See below for my sister’s experience. Down time wasn’t always that big a deal especially given the frequency.
I learned a lot from her struggles, including as I stated…it’s not what everyone assumes. Every day getting chemo meds, barfing endlessly, never out of bed. It’s just not like that for every treatment.
Definitely deSantis has a lot of responsibility and it does not help they are young and so are the kids. Very hard to handle kids with these diseases.
Can’t Trump move back to NYC? He owns plenty of property there and has fabulous digs in Trump Tower.
Yes, or anywhere else in the US!
