Rep. Peter Meijer said Sunday that the Republican Party has “no other option” than to rally behind former President Donald Trump.
“There was no alternative. There was no other path,” said Mr. Meijer, Michigan Republican, on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
Mr. Meijer, one of 10 House Republicans who voted last year to impeach Mr. Trump over the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, said that President Biden’s far-left agenda has kept Republicans in the Trump camp.
During the 2020 campaign, Mr. Biden “said he would be moderate and look for bipartisan solutions,” said Mr. Meijer.
“But then after — and frankly, I blame the former president for this — after we lost the two Senate seats in Georgia and the Senate flipped, it became an exercise in trying to be an LBJ or FDR-style presidency and enact transformational change in the absence of any compelling mandate from the American people to do so,” he said.
He referred to the loss of two Republican-held Senate seats in Georgia in the run-off election, which split the Senate 50-50 and gave Democrats control with Vice President Kamala D. Harris as the tie-breaker.
Mr. Meijer said “that gave the rallying signal. That created a very steep divide, and at the end of the day, there’s no other option right now in the Republican Party.”

Dis-elect Meijer.
He’s of no furthur[sic] use.
Leave, Peter!
Primary the Pajama Boy.
If you're a Republican, why would you even wonder why there is "no option but to support Trump"?
Going forward, I don’t know if Trump is our best choice. He has made a few too many missteps for my taste. Yet Rep. Meijer is correct. If not Trump, then we need to rally behind a Trump-like candidate.
Who on the horizon best fits that description? Ron DeSantis? Rand Paul?
They have no chance really
ALL Bush League Republicans need to be replaced.
Including the ones Trump endorses.
He’s up for re-election. Good riddance to bad rubbish.
“...Going forward, I don’t know if Trump is our best choice. He has made a few too many missteps for my taste....”
Yeah he made mistakes alright, but look at who was advising him. Traitor Mike Pence who we all trusted much like our President. We all went through a period of time wondering who was giving all the bad advice, and it turned out Pence was at the top of the list.
> Yeah he made mistakes alright, but look at who was advising him. <
True that. But Trump himself picked all those advisors. No one forced Pence or anyone else on him.
I must admit that I am puzzled about this. Trump is a smart guy. But except for Rudy Giuliani, pretty much everyone Trump picked turned out to be a traitor. That is not the record of a smart guy. I just don’t understand it, and it gives me doubts.
No, he’s not as popular as fanboys believe.
He MAY be the “most popular REPUB since Reagan”, but he isn’t nearly as popular as that that he was fraud proof.
Don’t drink the kool-aid
He is most definitely not the only choice. Trumpis too old for starters. The nerve of people to complain about how old Biden is, then turn right around and champion another who will be just too old.
DeSantis.
Maybe even Rand Paul (better than his loony dad).
Yes, I like those choices.
That means there are that many left-wing traitors in the GOP wing of the Uniparty. They were underground before November 2020; before that, they could still talk a good game, e.g. Pence, Linda Graham (half the time) . . .
> Don’t drink the kool-aid <
I’m not quite sure what you mean by that. But I will say this. Back in 2016 I thought that Trump was the last hope for the Republic. I still think that, and it saddens me to see that it probably just ain’t going to happen.
“I’m not quite sure what you mean by that.”
All his picks were not traitors. Remember Trump is not a hard-core conservative.
Very seldom does anyone prevail against such a stacked deck.
I’m not even sure there was wholesale fraud.
But if there was, it would never be believable if the candidate was as popular as Reagan, as EverTrumpers fantasize he is. You can only easily fake a small % of votes. The race was too close. Trump did himself no favors.
