35 submarines from World War II are still listed as “Missing”.
10 U.S.; 6 British; 13 Japanese; 2 German; and 4 others...

The problem was they could carry far more shells than torpedoes...
I suspect that many of our ships will, unfortunately learn this lesson one day.
Who knows, maybe there will be a naval battle again where the combatants are within eyesight.

The Surcouf supposedly collided with a freighter while the French submarine was running submerged at a depth of a few m meters.
Not funny. The Regia Maritime was virtually destroyed aside from capital ships on convoy escort to N Africa or in surface engagements with the Royal Navy in the Central Med.

My favorite sandwich…but Black Forest Ham sounds like sacrilege!
I won’t disagree about their leadership; not sure about the individual soldiers. I read a passage by a historian describing how in BOTH world wars Italy was far more of a liability to its allies than assistance.
The allies had to bolster them to keep them in WWI, and Germany had to re-direct troops to assist them in North Africa, the Balkans, etc..
Actually 3 more crewmen.
A lot of submarines got sunk during World War 2. They also sent a lot of ships to the bottom.
Leadership issues. The troops were brave and performed well when well led. Ariete performed quite well. But Italian tanks were quite poor, yet the tankers fought on.
“I would never say anything bad about any Italian soldier or sailor.”
Have you read “A Soldier of the Great War,” by Mark Helprin?
I read it some years ago, and enjoyed it immensely.
I am not much for fiction. Nothing wrong with it, but, it’s not my thing.
The book that helped change my opinions on the Italian soldiers was “The White War” about the Italian/Austro-Hungarian fight over the area around Trieste. It made the War in France look like a Blitzkrieg.
My personal favorite is “The Guns of August”, but, I have read a number of WWI books.
