On Thursday, the United States surpassed 580,000 cases, beating the record set only a day before.
That is believed to be a vast undercount because of testing shortages, the popularity of at-home tests and reporting delays over the holidays. What's more, scientists say, a significant number of people may have asymptomatic infections and never know it.
New estimates from researchers at Columbia University suggest that the United States illnesses could peak by Jan. 9...
In New York City, the first U.S. metropolis to see a major surge of omicron, the researchers estimated that cases will peak by the first week of the new year.

"We are realizing right now monitoring the data that the peak is going to come much faster," said Ali Mokdad, a public health researcher at the University of Washington. "My guess is it will happen before mid-January."
The numbers are increasing so quickly that some public health researchers say modeling isn't even necessary to see where things are headed. "You don't even need a model for this," said William Hanage, a public health researcher at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
"The United States could also see more localized outbreaks, with cases beginning to decline in current hot spots, like New York City and Washington, D.C., just as they're beginning to take off elsewhere. That could lead to more of a rounded peak instead of a sharp turnaround".
"now the most infectious period of the pandemic."
"It's unlike anything we've ever seen, even at the peak of the prior surges of covid," James Phillips, the chief of disaster medicine at George Washington University Hospital, told CNN.
While deaths and hospitalizations are also up nationwide, they are not increasing at the rate of new cases.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky said this week that hospitalizations remain "comparatively low".
In South Africa, hospitalizations declined almost as soon as case numbers did - very little lag. In the past with COVID, hospitalization rate changes lagged about two weeks behind changes in new cases.
So, the sniffles will peak in 2 weeks! Excellent!!
Yeah I was losing a lot of sleep worrying about it.
SMH
Aaahhhhh…..
First day of the new year.
Sun is shining…..
Mug of good coffee…..
Let’s see what they’ve come up with now.
😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴😴 What?
😨😷💉🐂💨💩💸
I hope you are correct in that it will not clog and shut down our hospital systems.
So it’s a pure coincidence that Omicron will “peak” just as SCOTUS is hearing the case on the vaxx mandates...
If “scientists” are predicting it, you may as well listen to your neighbor.
It’s hard to believe this country has turned into such a bunch of helpless wusses paralyzed by fear over a cold.
Lots of natural immunity accomplished in such a short time. This is great!!
I haven’t been able to catch covid or any of the variants. As a pureblood, I should have died at least 3 or 4 times by now. At least that’s what I get from the nightly news.
“I haven’t been able to catch covid or any of the variants.”
I’ve been waiting for my case as well.
About 20% of the infections with the earlier strains were asymptomatic. It seems like some larger number of Omicron infections produce no noticeable symptoms.
Excellent. Like you, I couldn’t care less about it.
Hell, if I weren’t for all the COVID fear porn being spewed by Branch Covidians on FR, COVID would be in my rearview mirror a hundred miles back.
Just in time for cedar season allergies to start to wane.
That’s my (non-) experience too. I don’t know anyone who ever got anything more than two-day sniffles, or anything at all, besides one person in the hospital for one week in March 2020 (almost two years ago). But it was worth it to destroy our economy and people’s lives and fortunes, because of the sky-is-falling fear of the Thing out there.
How crazy is that? People living normal lives, feeling healthy and yet they had the big, bad virus and didn't even know it!
Omicrud peaks on 1/9 and testing stops on 1/10 and voila’ no more china virus.
“It’s hard to believe this country has turned into such a bunch of helpless wusses paralyzed by fear over a cold.”
A nation of manipulated frightened wusses.
“COVID would be in my rearview mirror a hundred miles back”
Living in the free state of Florida it’s already in many peoples rearview mirror here.
Other than going g I to a medical facility or office I couldn’t tell you the last time I wore a mask.......I still see a lot of people wearing ‘em but that’s their business....I prefer to just live my life.
Hysteria over hypotheticals.
