The Latakia doctrine puts Russia in a bind - analysis
Jerusalem Post ^ | 29 December 2021 | SETH J. FRANTZMAN

Two airstrikes on the key port of Latakia, Syria, in the same month have raised eyebrows.

A report in The Wall Street Journal noted not only that Syria has accused Israel of the strike on the port this week, but also that a US official indicated that the Iranian presence at the facility “put a big target on civilian infrastructure that would not be targeted otherwise.”

The fires at the port burned throughout the day on December 28, showing that whatever was destroyed at the port was flammable and likely composed of munitions or other dangerous cargo transported from Iran to its allies, possibly being prepared for a final destination with Hezbollah in Lebanon.

This makes the strike on December 28 larger than the December 7 strike.

Both incidents raise eyebrows because Latakia is near several sensitive Russian bases in Syria, including the Khmeimim airbase and the Tartus naval base.

It’s important to note that Russia has S-400 air-defense systems in this area. However, reports at RIA Novosti apparently indicate Russia didn’t use air defenses. This report comes in the wake of Syrians wondering why nothing was done to prevent the airstrikes on December 28...

*This means that Russia may

Who writes this insightful analysis?

Is it odd all those “munitions” weren’t exploding during the fire at Latakia Port?

“Iran and Russia seem in disagreement about Syria.”

My take too. Syria trying to re-arm the Iranian terrorists who attack Israel, and Russia saying they’ll protect Syria, but Israel is free to take out the terrorists.

I suspect that a lot of the Permanent Cold Warriors here don’t realize that Israel and Russia have a very close relationship, and neither side wants to put that in danger.

(Trivia Fact: Russian is one of the 3 official languages in Israel, English is not)

Nearly all those Russian Bolsheviks move to Israel as the Right-Of-Return Zionist policy.

But they only use that as a pretext to get into the USA.
That’s why we have so many left wing communist Jews in America.

Interesting take, and certainly makes sense.

Russia also has a big stake in the Leviathan offshore natural gas development with Israel.

That makes them money, while Syria costs them money.

Iran and Russia seem in disagreement about Syria.
Syria? What's that? I mean, other than a quagmire for Iran, Russia, and the Assad dynasty?

What utter nonsense. Most Soviet emigre Jews are anti-leftist and socially conservative. Their American leftist brethren come from an earlier immigration waves predating the Russian revolution. Remember there was a moratorium on immigration from that part of the world for the 1920’s up to 1965.

Most of those Jews that came from Europe were Socialist Bundists, not Zionists. And Bundists hate Israel.

Iran and Russia are playing on different agendas in the Middle East and they are not always in sync with each other. They both want eastern Mediterranean bases for their own self interests, not so much ‘cause that helps each other. Even propping up Assad is a different long term objective to Russia than to the Mullahs of Tehran. The Mullahs would/will be much quicker to abandon Assad than will Putin. If Israel cuts down the Mullahs’ military in Syria, I don’t think Putin actually objects.

Even the Bundists were not left wing enough for the Bolsheviks . Let’s also not forget that the Bolsheviks killed or drove into exile virtually all other political parties, including more moderate leftists (such as Julius Martov)

Most of the ethnically Jewish Bolsheviks were eliminated during the purges in the 1930s and in the 1940s following WWII, when Stalin’s policies turned openly antisemitic towards the end of his rule.

Not those fleeing the Soviets and Soviet block after World War 2, and certainly not after the 1970s
