US House candidate leaves Republican Primary in an attempt to gain the Constitution Party's nomination (Cheney's seat)

Marissa Selvig, a candidate for Wyoming’s U.S. House seat in 2022, announced Monday that she will be campaigning as a member of the Constitution Party and leaving the Republican Primary.

The standing theory is that the more Republican candidates join the field, the easier it will be for Cheney to win, because candidates do not need a majority, only a plurality. With Selvig out of the primary, Hageman’s chances should be better in theory.

“[Cheney] is so low that her only chance would be if vast numbers of people run against her which, hopefully, won’t happen,” he said back in early May.

At a forum in the early summer, all of the candidates who attended — other than Marissa Selvig and state Sen. Anthony Bouchard, R-Cheyenne — said that they would throw their support behind the leading candidate come May 1, 2022. In a state that voted 70% for Trump in the 2020 general election, the “leading” candidate and Trump’s choice could be synonymous.

Since Hageman was endorsed, three candidates have dropped out. First, Cheyenne businessman Darin Smith and Bryan Miller, chairman of the Sheridan County Republican Party, announced they were ending their campaigns. A few days later, Rep. Chuck Gray, R-Casper, said he would be suspending his campaign. Bouchard remains in the race.

Bottom line, there's now only three people vying for the Republican party nomination - the incumbent, Liz Cheney, Trump's endorsed candidate, Harriet Hageman, and Anthony Bouchard, who is going to be a non-entity (but since he hasn't dropped out, he's probably being paid to stay in).

He’s probably staying in because Dick Cheney and his buddies made him a deal. Remember that when the primary is over. That jerk should never hold public office again no matter how much money is behind him.

The deep state will do anything to split the vote.

I researched the 2020 primary. As of now, with Bouchard in, Cheney would need about 60% of Democrat primary voters Plus a recent poll % X 2020’s primary turnout to get the GOP nomination. If Bouchard drops out, she needs 80-90% of Dem voters to surpass the Trump endorse candidate.

At some point next year, if Trump’s influence remains all powerful, she will have to decide to make an overt plea for Democrats to vote in the GOP primary.

Oh, and don’t be surprised if Dem leadership in Washington doesn’t make trips to Wyoming to support her begging.

President Trump got 70% in the general election. No amount of Dem trips to Wyoming is going to matter. Liz Cheney will still lose.

Smart move the Constitution Party is a plausible out that helps the Trump team get rid of cheney.

Cheney would need about 60% of Democrat primary voters...

In this case, it might be a play for the general election. When Cheney loses the Republican primary, she can run as an Independent just as Lisa Murkowski did in Alaska in 2010.

The Democrat candidate either drops out or fails to campaign, turning the election into a 3-way contest between Liz Cheney, the Republican candidate and the Constitutional candidate. This Constitution Party candidate then draws enough votes from the Republican to allow Cheney to squeak through in the general election.

Nah, her situation is far worse in the General. Constitution and Libertarians are non entities — added to 6.5% in the general.

The Dem lost by 44%. Add 6.5% to that and it’s still not even on the radar screen.

No, her only chance is Dem voters in the GOP primary, and that will take an enormous effort, including Pelosi coming to Wyoming to tell them to change party for the primary.

It’s a thin chance, but far better than the general.

Cheney cannot do so under Wyoming election law: https://law.justia.com/codes/wyoming/2014/title-22/chapter-5/article-3/section-22-5-302/

Murkowski ran as a Republican write-in candidate, not an independent.

Hard to even see a race there - Trump has spoken, and if I lived there, that would be my vote...without a doubt!

Running a 3rd party candidate as a plan B is an astute move.

Deep State is pushing RCV for WY.

And WY already has RCV-enabled voting machines.

I wouldn’t count Cheney out, yet.
