The family of 14-year-old Valentina Orellana-Peralta, who was fatally shot by Los Angeles police at a clothing store on Dec. 23, is demanding answers from the department.
...
Valentina was killed on Dec. 23 while holiday shopping with her mother at a Burlington clothing store in North Hollywood, California. She was fatally struck by a stray bullet in a dressing room, while holiday shopping with her mother, when LAPD officers opened fire on a suspect who had allegedly committed assault with a deadly weapon in the store.
...
The suspect, Daniel Elena-Lopez, did not have a gun at the scene, according to officials. He had a metal bike lock that was allegedly used to assault a woman and break glass.

No attack was in progress and perp was cornered without hostages or firearms when Police confronted him.
Yeah. Not good. A bike lock is dangerous but he wasn’t near anybody at the time of the murder.

Remember, civilians should be disarmed because only cops have the training to handle guns safely. /s
First thing I was taught in weapons training, was if you fire your weapon while on duty, you’d better know where that bullet is going to end up.
Yeah, saw his picture on the news last evening. Too bad he was not trying on clothes in that locker room.

Dudes’ been busy chasing hearses.
IIRC he was just down here representing the amad arbury family.
Crump is far worse than that, however, if it takes Crump to destroy cowardice in cops, I'll let the city pay the price.
Taxpayers that stay in LA or won't change it, can pay for the privilege.

I know right?
I know it’s a high stress job that puts you in very difficult situations but... dog.
Check this and then a quick net search of “cop shoots himself” will dispell that myth.
First thing I was taught by my Father when he trained me to begin hunting, was if you fire your weapon, you’d better know where that bullet is going to end up.
Saw this. Agree....unnecessary deadly force used. LAPD / LA County is gonna have to pay up. Sad ending. Girls parents will retire early. Had it happened here in Alabama the perp probably would have been shot by a civilian (or three) with a CCW or otherwise put into submission. There aint a pickup or SUV thats unarmed here.

I was told to remember every bullet you fire has an attorney on board.

What I’m worried about are the refugees that leave places like that, come to my state and start voting for the crap and pizza chit politicians that cause these messes.
What’s that definition of insanity again?
The officer is. Black so this doesn’t fit the narrative.
As I wrote on a previous thread, the criminal was apparently assaulting and causing significant bodily harm to other customers and he needed to be stopped. In these situations, we ask police to do their best and balance the safety of everyone involved. It will be very unfortunate if an innocent bystander was found to have been killed in this process by a police bullet. However, outcomes like this will sometimes happen. This incident will be thoroughly investigated and any mistakes by the officers involved will be identified. At this point it is too soon to say whether the police are civilly or criminally at fault, and we should refrain from drawing premature judgements. The only guilt we can be confident about is that of the now deceased criminal who is ultimately responsible for this girl’s death.
Well, as you point out, it's real, and a word has been coined for it:
Californication
Sarcasm tag unnecessary, I understand you completely and Agree.
The perp had a bicycle lock. The cops shot him with an AR-15. An AR-15 versus a bicycle lock, indoors, in a situation where the bullet can easily penetrate a wall and kill the innocent 14yo girl on the other side, is a completely disproportionate use of force. A taser and a billyclub would have been appropriate.
A lot of firearms experts will tell you that an AR is not a great option for home defense because of the possibility of overpenetration -- the bullet going past the perp and hurting/killing someone in a different room or even a different house. The same concern is appropriate here.
I would also like to know if the cops were using FMJ ammunition, which makes the overpenetration problem even worse.
Fortunately, I was trained as a child by my Father and NRA instructors in an era when lawyers were not so prevalent.
When I joined the Navy, Navy training (under Marine Instructors) continued that training almost seamlessly.
I don't know how or why it has been de-emphasized for Police in America.
