I don’t think this is mere stupidity. It is a willful refusal to assemble facts in the most logical way. In Wallace’s case, it is partly what she is being paid to say and partly her own overinflated ego.
As an aside, I had the misfortune of working an overseas visit for Bush W. when she was in the White House. She was a complete douche canoe to everyone below her and was therefore universally despised.
