Thousands of Russian troops who participated in drills near the Ukraine border are marching home.
More than 10,000 soldiers are returning to their permanent bases after a month of drills that ramped up international tensions over the region, Reuters reported Saturday, citing the Russian Interfax independent news agency.
It’s not clear if their movements represent a reversal of the troop buildup that began in the spring and has seen up to 175,000 troops deployed on the border of the two former Soviet states.
The moves came a day after Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky held a video call with 20 US senators and members of Congress on Friday

Launching major offensive operations in the dead of a Russian winter would be unusual to say the least. They’ll wait until next May.
I also thought this was a nonsensical time to threat war.
Russia learned nothing from the past?
The Winter War with Finland didn’t quite work out as they’d hoped.
Another victory for our great leader, Brandon.
Biden scared them off by threatening to do nothing.
Untold story: Putin got cold feet and abruptly retreated when he got a sternly worded phone call from Joe Biden.
Putin: “I felt like Corn Pop revisited. Biden’s bad side is really not a good place to be. My palm sweat was all over my smartphone.”
Actually dead of winter is a good time to invade. Ground is frozen. In spring, Ukraine is famous for its deep mud. Tanks would be confined to the roads.
“In this season you have what we call Rasputitsa, which is mud,” said Pavel Felgenhauer, a Moscow-based military analyst for the Jamestown Foundation. Yet for any attack on eastern Ukraine, he said, Russian generals would want to move fast to outflank the main Ukrainian force around the conflict-ridden Donetsk and Lugansk regions, before its soldiers have time to dig in.
“We have to be able to move our tanks and other vehicles off the roads to do that, which in the black earth region down there would be impossible right now. Once the frosts come you can move in any direction you want,” Felgenhauer said.

Exactly.
This “pullback” is a feint. Classic Art of War - appear to be pulling back just before an attack.
Of course instead of breaking camp to return home these troops could go on the offensive tomorrow.
Maybe President Brandon scared them off with his Winter of Death warning.
More than anything Putin is a prima dona. If he isn’t getting his face on television enough he will throw a tantrum.
Getting some troops home for Christmas.
Russian Orthodox Christmas will be celebrated on January 7th 2022.
So last number I saw was 249,000 troops involved. So now we should cheer because it’s 239k?
I just smiled when I read the headline....(chuckle too)...Putin knows what he’s doing without question.
Keep them guessing.
Little gesture since Biden agreed to talks Putin initiated. He could move more as the day approaches and as negotiations unfold. But he looks like the good guy to the Russian people without question. They do know their President and how he works.
However Biden’s people aren’t real bright when it comes to counter moves or how to do what’s needed so we’ll see.
So much for the invasion hysteria. 😆
