Trump-backed Georgia candidate pushes to eliminate drop boxes, machine voting in elections

Georgia State Sen. Burt Jones (R), who has been endorsed by former President Trump, is running for lieutenant governor of his state on a platform of election integrity as he's pushing for the elimination of drop boxes and a return to voting on paper ballots.

Jones told the John Solomon Reports podcast on Tuesday that drop boxes used in the 2020 election were not legal in Georgia, since the state legislature didn't permit them, but the consent decree made between the Democratic Party and state officials allowed them to be used.

While the state legislature legalized drop boxes in the election integrity bill passed earlier this year, a key difference is that the drop boxes must be designated to a precinct, not "spread out all over Metro Atlanta, like they were last time," Jones explained.

"[I]f you can take your absentee ballot to a designated precinct during operational hours, you know, then why do you need the drop box?"Jones asked. "You can just hand it in to the designated attendant for that. And so I don't think that drop boxes in any situation are necessary."

Returning to paper ballots and getting rid of electronic machine voting could make elections more secure, Jones suggests.

"[W]hether there's anything wrong with the machines or not ... I can't sit here and say that the appropriate authorities have examined them," he said. "However, I do know that the electorate do not trust them. And so I think that we need to move towards getting rid of the third-party vendors and the machinery completely, and allow our counties — that have the ability — to go to paper ballots or choose their own equipment themselves, instead of mandating it, like we have right now."

Burt Jones was one of the best special teams players I have ever seen in college football. Sounds like he knows how crooked the 2020 election was.

...consent decree made between the Democratic Party and state officials...

That would be one of those distinctions without a difference.

I have never heard of ballot drop boxes before the last election. Did they ever exist before? It seems like a pretty bad idea (Unless you plan on cheating)

As a practical matter, I don't think you can go to all paper balloting, but we have a decent system for in-person voting here in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania:

  1. Voters get a piece of thermal paper when they sign in at the registration tables.
  2. They go to a private booth where the paper is inserted and they mark their ballots.
  3. The ballot is printed out and they get a chance to check their selections before turning it into a scanner which electronically counts their vote and drops it into a secure box.
The box, as well as the readout is then driven to the courthouse by each precinct election judge after the polls close.
  4. Mail-in balloting has been counted and reported with observers and challengers present BEFORE the in-person precinct results start being reported.

THE RESULT: Credible elections in our county.

Yep. Since the parties get lists of who has voted, it is a trivial matter to fill in fake ballots for anyone who has not sent theirs in.

He’s absolutely right. More still needs to be done. Require each precinct to report how many ballots they have each day. Ban all ballots received after Election Day. I don’t care if you put it in the mail. If it did not get there by Election Day it is invalid and cannot be counted. Require that poll watchers from each party be given the right to meaningfully observe the vote count. Define that as close enough to easily read each ballot. Require that any ballot a poll watcher disputes go into a disputed pile that must be adjudicated by a bipartisan panel. Have overhead cameras on each poll worker and record the video of the count. That is a public record which must be provided immediately upon request by anyone. Require an election audit by outside auditors after each election. The report they issue is a public record which must be immediately provided in full. Ban mail in voting except under strict guidelines -ie a voter must prove they cannot make it to a polling place on a designated voting day. Government issued photo ID required for all. All ballots are public record and must be provided in full immediately.

The only reason to oppose any of this is to cheat.

Well, that and the fact that huge numbers of people in both parties really like the convenience of voting by mail.

Prison, for murderers and rapists, is inconvenient.

Voting by mail is the only form of voting in which the forensic trail is invalid, by design.

Point of order:

Just because your sheet shows who you voted for, it doesn’t mean that vote isn’t changed down the line (see ‘20 election where Trump votes were magically removed from him and given to Bidunce).

There needs to be a poverty profile of Georgia counties. I suspect some white counties are more poor than Fulton county. Applying these rules to those poor white counties undercuts arguments that the poor cannot get to the polls at a particular time, nor find a way to get gov’t ID.

Election integrity is vastly more important than anybody’s convenience. Get to the polls like Americans did for over 200 years.

I'm just saying tens of millions of people have reasons to want mail in voting that have nothing to do with fraud.

The separation of a ballot from election officials and the election stream.

The RAT post office.

Most states let you track your ballot from the time it's mailed until your vote's recorded.

There's limited damage the USPS can do if you care enough to pay attention.
