Democrats set for showdown over filibuster, voting rights

Democrats are barreling toward a showdown over voting rights and changes to the Senate rules, after months of growing frustration from within the caucus.

The party is under pressure, from both outside groups and lawmakers, to pass federal election legislation as GOP-run state legislatures debate new voting rules and as the start of the 2022 midterm election is fast-approaching.

After watching Senate Republicans block election and voting bills via the filibuster, which requires 60 votes for most legislation to advance, Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) is vowing to bring the fight to a head in January.

“The Senate will consider voting rights legislation, as early as the first week back. … If Senate Republicans continue to abuse the filibuster and prevent the body from considering this bill, the Senate will then consider changes to any rules which prevent us from debating and reaching final conclusion on important legislation,” Schumer wrote in a letter to the caucus.

But forcing a vote could highlight division within the caucus, where both Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) support the 60-vote threshold. Democrats need both of them to ultimately vote to change the rules.

“We’ve got to get this done. … We are having a robust conversation,” said Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.), who has publicly and privately pushed his colleagues to be more aggressive in coming up with a plan to pass voting rights legislation.

They nuke the filibuster and they’ll actually destroy the Republic.

Which is their goal. The RATS are not running around saying democracy everywhere simply because they're being imprecise like most people. Their long-term goal of instituting Marxism runs through democracy, but to get there they have to get rid of the Republic's safeguards like the Electoral College, states rights, and the filibuster. What the RATS have discovered is it's the in-house safeguard—the filibuster—not the Constitutional ones, that is most troublesome.

The last thing that John Lewis ever did for the black community was getting his head bashed on a bridge. Since then, he was four fingers to his own face. The world is much improved by his death.

Democrats know that if they don’t pass the Cheat Forever Act, they are going to get absolutely slaughtered both in the midterms and then in 2024 after MAGA Republicans pass real election integrity laws in several key swing states. Stuffing ballot boxes is the Donkey’s only chance to hang on to power.

That’s exactly what they want to do. No voter ID, required mass mail in voting. No doubt never clean up the voter roles, require drop boxes everywhere, require states to allow trunkfulls of ballots that were “found” 3 days after the polls closed, ban requirements for districts to report how many ballots they have at the end of each day, ban election audits, etc etc. IOW every single election integrity safeguard.

It would be kind of like a bunch of bank robbers enacting laws to ban safes and cameras and armed guards in banks - as well as any investigations into bank robberies. Gosh, why might they be pushing such measures?

Dems first used nuclear option on the filibuster in 2013.

Then McConnell went nuclear in 2017.

It’s kind of hard to cry “foul” when both parties do it. If it’s wrong, it’s wrong—no matter who does it and no matter what the reason.

I’ve often wondered why we do not have a national voter ID with a picture and thumb print of each and every CITIZEN.

I’m sure they’d say...but there are those who cannot afford it or because of their economic status they cannot get to the government office to acquire an official voter ID.

Give it to them free of charge and send a bus to the poorest of the poor areas to give’em a lift.

It is insane to not require an ID to prove who you are during an election.

Giving up the filibuster is giving up the relevance of any single senator. It will become the house where the members are totally irrelevant and the leadership is everything.

“Schumer’s last attack on the filibuster brought us several SC justices.”

Wasn’t that Harry Reid’s brilliant maneuver?
