The road to my appointment was wall to wall cars!! And slippery. My thot of making a stop on the way home was nixed quickly!

BRAHMS: “GEISTLICHES WIEGENLIED,” OP. 91/2Although this has a high opus number, it dates from Jo’s younger years before he grew the full-face beard and exchanged his four-pack-a-day habit for top-shelf Cuban stogies. In a way, it’s his attempt at a Christmas carol. The poem is Spanish, from Lope de Vega, translated into German by Emmanuel von Geibel. It’s Mary asking the treetops to quiet down lest it wake her infant.From the beginning you can hear that no amateur singer could possibly handle this; it requires an operatic contralto. There is an obbligato role for viola, which plays an actual German Christmas carol over the vocal and piano lines. This is Andre Previn on piano, Cecil Aronowitz on viola, and Janet Baker handling vocal duties. In German with English subtitles.Brahms: “Geistliches Wiegenlied,” Op. 91/2

Have you been getting snow this week? Reckon you might have a white Christmas?
It’s been chilly here but from tomorrow into next week, we have warm weather ... 60s and a couple of days in the 70s. Hubby said he might need to be out on the mower Christmas Day. LOL

ADAM: “CANTIQUE DE NOEL”Classical composers never managed to write a successful Christmas carol. That task was left to amateurs like Thomas Wade, Franz Gruber and Anonymous, who wrote so many great tunes. Handel and Mendelssohn had carols attributed to them, but the tunes had their sources elsewhere and were adapted long after the composers’ deaths when they couldn’t complain.The one significant exception was “Cantique de Noel,” known in English as “O Holy Night.” The composer, Adolphe Adam (accent on the last syllable of both names) is best known for the ballet “Giselle.” But this tune guarantees him a place in the Composers’ Hall of Fame. In the last verse it requires the singer to hit a fifth over the high tonic (not a drink!) and run down the scale to the tonic, sounding each note separately, not using portamento to slur the notes. It’s inadvisable to hand this to church congregations; the results can be comical.This is an Italian conservatory concert with some fine work from all concerned. In French.Adam: “Cantique de Noel”
