With Trump’s endorsement, Vern Buchanan shuts the door on fledgling Primary challenger

I would say it was fun while it lasted but that would imply it even started.

When former President Donald Trump gave U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan his “complete and total endorsement” on Monday it effectively eliminated any chance that Martin Hyde’s circus act of a campaign for Florida’s 16th Congressional District would get off the ground.

It’s not like Buchanan needed the former President’s endorsement to destroy Hyde’s chances of winning the Republican nomination. Hyde did that to himself the moment he called Trump “wretched” and said he was “horrified” by the “bigotry and bullying” of Trump supporters.

He may as well have called them a “basket of deplorables.”

Since then, Hyde has done everything to distract from his anti-Trump rhetoric. He recently announced he was paying Roger Stone $10,000 a month to run his campaign (Hey Martin, better ask Roger for a refund before he splits) and, in his latest publicity stunt, he hanged a “Let’s Go Brandon” Christmas display on his front balcony.

Stay classy.

But let’s be honest, Trump’s endorsement in a Republican Primary is a golden ticket. Buchanan now has it in his back pocket — and that shouldn’t come as a surprise.

The longtime Congressman is currently the No. 2 Republican on the House Ways and Means Committee. With U.S. Rep. Devin Nunes, the current ranking member, set to retire, Buchanan is the frontrunner to replace him. Assuming the GOP retakes the House next year — and that seems inevitable at this point — Buchanan would become Chair.

The Ways and Means Committee is responsible for overseeing the U.S. tax code, tariffs, and key social programs such as Social Security and Medicare. In other words, Buchanan could be a key ally in getting the President’s agenda through Congress.

So where does that leave Hyde?

Calling Trump supporters names is not a strategy to win hearts and minds of those Trump supporters - as it turns out.

Trump endorsements win 137-3, ‘few parallels’ in history

For anyone questioning former President Donald Trump’s lock on the Republican Party after his 2020 loss, look no further than the impact his endorsement packs.

In new polling of several House Republican primary races, a Trump endorsement pushes 2022 candidates past 50%, even against long-established incumbents such as Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney.

“The Trump endorsement is a true dagger,” said Zachary Moyle of SoCo Strategies. “Trump is the king of kingmakers.”

In last month’s elections, for example, Trump-endorsed candidates went four for four.

And according to Brian Jack, the former White House political director, Trump’s 2020 record was 120-2, and this year, it is 17-1.

“Results don’t lie,” he said. “The power of President Trump’s endorsement is undeniable.”

Martin Hyde's campaign website

He's really trying to fool people that he is a Trump supporter.

Notice the Trump Train hat in his hand. 😋

A liberal hit piece from liberal self-proclaimed media-mogul, Peter Schorsch, whose ego is always on full display. "He hanged a “Let’s Go Brandon” Christmas display on his front balcony" -- it's "he hung", illiterate moron. I suggest Peter take some English classes before he makes another attempt at what he considers 'journalism'.

Long ago, I and many others here in Sarasota country helped get Vern his place in Congress. He's been OK, but he is a bit of a squish. Nice guy, but too apt to 'go along to get along'. I've also met Martin Hyde on a couple of occasions, and his conservative credentials far outstrip Vern's.

Which is why the same leftmedia that years ago was raking Buchanan over the coals for being one of those 'typical rich, out-of-touch Republicans' is now seeing him as the lesser of two evils. Not that they wouldn't mind seeing Buchanan drop dead -- SSDD. Hypocrites to the core.

Hyde supports Trump fully. I've met him at a few rallies and events here and he never had a bad word to say.

This is agitprop.

This is a good example of why they were going after Trump so hard. Many people who vote in Primaries don’t really know the candidates at the lower levels (lower than President), but Trump still has rock-solid GOP support...so they trust his judgment.

(watch the NeverTrumpers here materialize again!)

well, if that’s true, then he made an incalculably stupid mistake in calling Trump supporters names. Separately, that a candidate has unimpeachable conservative credentials does not mean that he’s going to get any traction. See Mark Sanford. Sanford’s character is terribly off-putting, but he had a lot of supporters here.

"he made an incalculably stupid mistake in calling Trump supporters names."

And where did you get this information? It's been covered in some of the liberal 'news' here, but where else? If you have more legit sources, I would like to see them. Seriously.

I have spoken to Mr. Hyde, and seen him speak, and what he said then was nothing but supportive of conservatives and the ongoing MAGA movement.

Doesn’t sound like Buchanan had much to fear from his primary opponent to begin with.

I hope Trump and the RNC get involved in Ill-Annoy to replace leftist Sean Casten and doofus Adam Kinzinger. “Calamity Jan” Shakowski - along with her felon husband “Creamy Bob” Creamer - need to go away, too.

I support your comments that Vern Buchanan is a squish. Vern has a lot of money and that scares off true MAGA politicians in Manatee and Sarasota County.

Unfortunately, we have ‘squish’ GOP Representatives in far too many states for the same reason we have Vern Buchanan.
