John Thune’s Senate career began with a thunder when he defeated Democratic Leader Tom Daschle in 2004.
Now, it may end with a whimper.
There is growing speculation that Thune might not run for re-election in 2022. Even if he does run again, the thought of Thune retiring at some point in the future is a wake-up call for the South Dakota Republican Party, which has enjoyed an era of peace and prosperity since Thune won his seat in 2004.
More on that in a moment.
For some, talk of Thune retiring is akin to a poker player folding when he’s holding a straight flush. Only the delusional think he can be beaten in a primary or general election. Meanwhile, he is the second highest ranking member for Senate Republicans, and he would be a favorite to become the Republican Party leader at some point in his fourth term.

What bedlam?
Does anyone think South Dakota is going to elect a Democrat?
Personally, the more GOP war hoses that retire and make room for young blood, the better. They may not be better, but they certainly won’t be worse.
“Does anyone think South Dakota is going to elect a Democrat?”
Yes, the mainstream media.
Look at who wants to take him out on our side Bruce Whelan is a stiff. I watched him debate Stephanie Sandlin Hersth for 60 tortuous minutes. All she had to do is smile and talk with her hands. Bright clothes. A ditz. Anyone willing to see the replay on CSPAN(2006) can see why we’re the stupid party.
Normally the house seat in SD is in line to succeed. Not this geeky RINO-forgot his name.
Thune is a phoney, swamp, douchebag ex-jock, but like McConnel, became rich selling his office and now owns a voting block of morons who keep him there no matter what.
Same vacuous imbeciles that kept sending Daschle back.
You never know. A Democrat might get lots of exposure if he appears on the Tom Daschle radio show. *snicker*
The Republicants sure know or not how to pick em.
At one time, South Dakota was represented in the U.S. Senate by James Abourezk and George McGovern, two of the most Liberal Democrats in the body.
They have before... but in a mid year election with a democrat in the white house... let alone the walking vegetable democrat in there presently???
Unless there is something HUGELY wrong with the GOP candidate that runs, or some local politics in SD that create an anti GOP backlash (Scandal around governor or something), not going to happen.
So, realistically, who do we want to replace Mitch as Senate Majority Leader if the 2022 elections aren’t stolen again?
There aren’t a lot of reliably Conservative senators from which to choose, and none really among the current “leadership”.
Ron Johnson? John Kennedy? Ted Cruz? Josh Hawley?
Noem would make a FINE Senator from SD. And with a couple of terms there, she may be able to rid herself of the horrific ‘advisers’ that she presently has and figure out that her voters are more important than the Chamber of Commerce. And assuming that, she will have ‘grown’ enough to run for the top job.
hope he retires, and good riddance. I think cornhole believes he is Mitch’s heir
If SD Republicans can’t do better than Thune, they aren’t trying at all.
S. Dakota can do way better than Thune. He definitely was an underperformer.
Thune always seemed to have a spare shoe to toss into the machinery.
Ballot box stuffers too.
Josh hawley would be best. Ted cruz the worst.
Rand Paul. He’d convene a Senate committee to investigate Tony Fauci and all his corruption and fraud the moment he’s sworn in, and he’d publicize the youknowwhat out of it.
