BBC Bitcoin mining report used in crypto-scam
BBC News ^ | 19 December 2021 | James Clayton

Chiranjeevi lives in Hyderabad, India, with his young family.

He is a smiley, glass-half-full kind of guy - naturally positive and full of energy.

He's smart, too, and works in an Indian tech company.

He's the least likely person, you'd think, to fall victim to an online scam.

Yet in October he was defrauded out of his life's savings - $4,000 (£3,000).

He couldn't believe it.

"I was so stressed. I was just lost. I told my wife and she said, 'I thought you were intelligent. How did you lose so much money?'"

He messaged me in late October out of the blue, telling me what had happened.

He wasn't just telling me about the deception, though. He was warning me.

Because central to the scam was a distorted version of my reporting.

Earlier this year I was given access to a Bitcoin mine in New York state. I made a report about it - focused on how mining Bitcoin produces carbon emissions.

However, that is not the report that Chiranjeevi saw.

On 18 October he joined a Telegram channel called B2C Mining.

Telegram is an encrypted messaging service, like WhatsApp, but with "channels", which can feel more like a Facebook group.

The B2C Mining channel claimed to be part of a company that owned and operated a Bitcoin mine in Russia.

Bitcoin scam. Read the whole article, it's good. Here's a link to another of this guy's pieces about the carbon emissions produced by bitcoin mining. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFrFsAAzRYg

Bitcoin scam

Words that naturally go together just like "peas and carrots".

There are times when I feel lucky that I am not a youngster now as the internet scams keep proliferating. Youth, by its lack of weary experience, gets enthusiastic and headstrong! This is nothing new, in the 1920s, the US Stock Market fed on that enthusiasm with the 10% buy-ins. The 1929 crash gave that generation a lesson that was the Great Depression!

I wonder if there is anyplace, outside intelligent and caring families, that teaches the age-proven truisms that are found from the Bible to Aesop’s Fables? Things that I was taught in my public school that is now forbidden knowledge. “Offer too good to be true!” “A fool and his money!” “Hard work pays dividends!” etc.

The mining banks don’t just soak up huge amounts of electricity (enough to power a small country like Iceland or Columbia) and create a lot of emissions. They cause hella problems in the small communities where they typically operate.

Like a house full of illegal immigrants, these guys never check with anybody before they invade your neighborhood and start setting up their nuisance operations. A data mine is as likely to catch on fire as a meth lab.

I don’t really care about how much energy my neighbor consumes - but the constant noise, lowlife a$$holes hanging around, and home insurance rates going up are quite a drag.

The article is worth reading, anyway. The one data mine in NYC the guy wrote about uses as much juice as the nation of Columbia.

“The 1929 crash gave that generation a lesson that was the Great Depression!”

Economic policies gave us the great depression.

The CO2 “concern” is a HOAX!

If you are truly a believer in the “dangers” of CO2...then do your part and stop exhaling your own CO2.

The world will be a better place.

Correct. Bitcoin uses computers, like any other computer. Bitcoin use electricity at its cheapest rate, at night, weekends, and other off times. The claim itself is a scam.

“Stay out of debt.”

Great principle - but what would happen if our entire nation, including the government, followed it?

Answer: Everybody would starve to death, since our money supply is entirely backed by debt. If all debt was paid off then our money supply would be $0.

This is why we need to get back to having our US Treasury issue our money supply without debt backing, instead of the Fed.

CO2 is food for Plants & Trees.

Yet leftwing environmental “tree huggers” want to eliminate CO2 because it’s dangerous.

I don't need 50 reasons only one, bit coins simply do not exist. They are a compilation of 1's and 0's in cyberspace.

Anyone or anything could change that combined sequence anytime and leave bitcoin holders with nothing, not even any evidence their holdings ever existed.

What if the power goes out? That’s always my thought. I mean, paper money is hinkey enough. This is like imaginary money that exists in a fantastical world that somehow realer than the one we live in.

Not.

You are right. Lose power to any data base system and you have a solid state paperweight.

At least the Germans learned, right after WWI, that you could still burn worthless paper money for heat.

Venezuelans lost their money on bitcoin, finding out that it was a scam at the very worst possible time - when their nation’s economy was crashing and they ran to cash machines and banks trying to cash out their investments.

Now, however, bitcoin and other scam currencies are flourishing in Venezuela. Hm. Seems strange. Hard to figure out. May take a government-funded think tank to do so.
