There is no real shortage of truck drivers. The trucking industry simply has to find a better way to compensate their drivers. The current compensation standard — where drivers are paid by the mile and not by the hour — is completely ludicrous. Drivers who are on company time don’t get paid a penny when they are shut down while they wait for a customer to unload the trailer, when they are stuck in traffic, and when they must stop driving for hours at a time due to hours-of-service restrictions.
